Hey my name is george, I'm a sophmore upstate new york in a public school. I am applying sophmore year to Taft, Hotchkiss, St. Andrews, and Loomis Chaffee. I play 2 varsity sports and i have a 3.65 unweighted GPA in honors courses. I rank in the top 7 percent in my class. My teachers have given me stellar recs. I am predicting my SSAT's will be in the 80-90 range (probaly the lower 80s)I really am curious do i have a chance of getting into these schools.

Of course you have a chance, especially at Loomis! However, it is hard to predict who will be accepted. Because people generally do not apply to a school unless they believe they qualify, most of the applicants will qualify. Unfortunatley, there are not enough spots for all qualified applicants. See the thread "Selected, not rejected." If you have your heart set on boarding school for next year, my suggestion is to add a few more schools that are matches and safeties. BTW, I'm assuming that you spoke with the boarding school coaches of your varsity sports. If you haven't done this yet, it is a good idea, especially if you are a very strong player.

I would agree that you have a pretty good chance. Some other schools to look at (if you're not into AESD): Concord, Blair, Peddie, Lawrenceville, and Hill.

Lawrenceville, Hotchkiss: Reach
Taft: Slight reach
Concord, St. Andrews and Loomis: High match
Blair, Peddie, Hill: Match

if you are set to go to boarding school, i think you need a true safety
also boarding schools admissions are less systematic than colleges
but for a solid shot at hotchkiss or lawrenceville you need a SSATs of low 90s (92 is average for hotchkiss and 89 for lawrenceville) and better grades to have a solid shot ..but that doesnt mean you have litle chance..just means the rest of your app must at least stand out or "hook" the adcom

I am applying for the sophmore year. My 3.65 GPA is my high school GPA. But my middleschool 8th grades is a 4.0. I am expecting to get an 80-90 on the overall SSATs. I have recieved a award for one of my sports. Do these details change predictions. Any tips for the SSAT. I haven't taken it this year.

Try to exemplify a passion for something, especially your varsity sport. What did you have to go through to get there? What is the hardest thing to concentrate on during a game?

To raise your SSAT scores, take at least one practice test a week and you will increase them a lot. If you don't want to take one a week, try once a month. Are you taking the SSATs this year or next?

George -- what's your GPA?

Isn't what he posted above his currant GPA?

Whooooosh...

Taft: slight reach
Hotchkiss: match
Loomis Chaffee: high match/safety
Sorry, I don't know much about St. Andrews. But I'd say you're in at Loomis.

I am sending in transcipts from grades 8-10 and i have a unwieghted GPA in total of 3.8.
To break this down
I have a 3.65 in highschool for my freshman and first semester of sophmore year.
In 8th grade i have a solid 4.0

seasonsoflove, how could taft be a reach and hotchkiss be a match? hotchkiss is much more well known.. i always though hotchkiss was a top tier school and taft was sort of like.. well, sort of, but a school people apply to more as a safety. enlighten me lol.

I don't think Taft is a safety for almost anyone--I would say probably a low reach for George. Hotchkiss I would think is a high reach. I would agree that it is top-tier.

considering acceptance rate, prestige, mean SSAT, mean SAT and college matriculation....hotchkiss is much more competitive at taft..however, the stress level at hotchkiss is much higher too..this is from a kid who transfered to hotchkiss from taft

oh and i did ask my friend who just graduated from college, who's interning in the admissions office at lawrenceville, he agrees with the original analysis

Hotchkiss: High Reach (as for 95% of the applicants, excluding the legacies and wealthies of course)
Lawrenceville: High reach/ Reach (again as for 99% of the applicants, excluding the legacies and wealthies of course)
Taft: Slight reach
Concord, St. Andrews and Loomis: High match
Blair, Peddie, Hill: Match

I know for sophmore year 100 people apply for 20 spots. This seems a very small number. Are these 100 people less qualified than freshman applicants

I imagine that they have similar qualifications to the freshman group. Some secondary prep schools go through 9th grade, and many of these students apply to boarding schools. Others didn't consider the boarding option until 9th grade. I've heard that some 10th grade applicants are offered spots in the entering 9th grade class -- what they call "refreshed." I don't know much about this. St. Andrews is a small school if I remember correctly. If you like the size and the Episcopalian orientation, it is supposed to be a wonderful school.

hey george13, i think you'll have a good shot at getting into these schools its just a matter of how well u compare with the other 100 canidates

I am a sophmore applying for sophmore year next year. So i will be "refreshed". Will that help?
