I’m a high school Junior getting ready to apply for college this summer. I’ve made a short list of schools that I am interested in and am wondering if I can get any feedback.
My stats:
SAT: 660 Writing 790 Math 610 Writing
PSAT: 193
ACT: 32
GPA: On my school weighted 100 point scale: 101.1
On 4 point: 3.9 UW 4.4 W
I’ve also taken 7 AP courses, all the ones offered at my school and plan to take 5 next year. I’m also taking 2 SAT subject tests in a couple of weeks. I am in my school’s band and have an important leadership position. I do community service through band, church and my sister’s gymnastics establishment.
I want to go into Engineering, either civil or electrical but am open to new choices. The schools that I am interested in are,
California Berkeley
Illinois Urbana Champagne
Michigan
Purdue
USC
UCLA
I am just wondering my chances of acceptance at these schools. Thank you for any input.
California Berkeley High reach
Illinois Urbana Champagne Low reach
Michigan High reach
Purdue Match
USC High reach
UCLA reach
Tom, would you recommend to not even apply to the “high reach” schools? Or should I still consider them a possibility.
Apply to 1 or 2 reaches if you can afford it but get more matches and a safeties: Indiana University, Ohio State, Pitt etc.
Thanks for the advice. Do you think there is anything I can do the lower the severity of some of those reaches? Or is it based off of factors I can’t change anymore?
Increase your Critical reading score by a smidge and you will be competitive at most of those schools. otherwise your ACT is great. The only school that you have listed that would be a reach IMO is Cal Berkeley. Otherwise the others are definitely feasible.
Don’t base your college picks off of what people tell you. Look on Naviance if your school has one and then you can get real data whether or not you have a chance.
Your scores are low for most of the schools. Have you thought to take the SAT or ACT again?
At least to increase CR for the SAT. Purdue should be the easiest there.
