Intended major?

Engineering

Your UC GPA is within range but SAT CR score is below the 25th percentile and your SAT Math is above the 50th percentile. Do you plan to retake?

UC’s are very GPA focused so based on your UC GPA this was the Freshman admit rate for 2015 for all the UC’s:

Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.80-4.19:

UCB: 12%
UCLA: 14%
UCSD: 39%
UCSB: 49%
UCD: 52%
UCI: 57%
UCSC: 83%
UCR: 90%
UCM: 92%

Since Engineering is very competitive at all the UC’s, you want your stats above the averages. The quoted admit rates do not take into account your test scores, HS course rigor, EC’s and essays.

UCD GPA and test scores of middle 25%-75% students

High School UC GPA: 3.95 - 4.25
ACT Composite Score: 26 - 32
SAT Critical Reading: 550 - 680
SAT Mathematics: 590 - 750

I would say UCD is a High Match so 50/50 chance for an acceptance. Again since EC’s and essays are subjective it is difficult to tell how they will be considered by admissions. Definitely worth an application, but I would make sure you have UCSC/UCR and/or UCM on your list as solid Match and Safety schools.

Thank you so much! You are really helpful.

So you’re saying UC schools consider GPA averages higher than SAT/ACT scores averages

Yes, UC’s are very GPA focused and you will see many applicants with High test scores but lower GPA’s being rejected or waitlisted than the other way around. For UCLA and UCB, you want to high GPA and test scores for the best chances just due to their selectivity. There are always exceptions but this is where essays and EC’s are considered in the holistic review.

So let’s say like the GPA scale is out of 5, but it was impossible for us to get a 5 GPA. Only because we didn’t take all AP classes, the school didn’t offer it, the max was a 4.4. What do we do about this? Does this lower my chances?

UC’s do not care about your HS GPA scale. They give you the instructions to calculate your UC GPA the way they want so that is all the counts. They do take note of your HS course rigor and what courses are offered at your HS. If no AP’s or only a few are offered, you will not be penalized as long as you took advantage of what was available.

All right thank you.

A 1300 is fine for Davis right?

The following the Freshman Profile for UCD for last year’s Freshman Class:

GPA and test scores of middle 25%-75% students

High School UC GPA: 3.95 - 4.25
ACT Composite Score: 26 - 32
SAT Critical Reading: 550 - 680
SAT Mathematics: 590 - 750

Your SAT scores are within range.

@Gumbymom those statistics are from the UC website http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/campuses/davis/freshman-profile/index.html

The UC Davis school profile has different statistics. https://www.ucdavis.edu/admissions/undergraduate/student-profile/

The UC Davis profile states that the ranges represent the middle 50% of admitted students while the UC website says middle 25% - 75%.

It is interesting to see that the middle 50% has a slightly lower GPA but slightly higher test scores than the middle 25% - 75%.

High School UC GPA 3.92-4.23
ACT Composite Score: 27-32
SAT Critical Reading 550-690
SAT Mathematics: 600-760

I’m taking one SAT subject test, is that enough? (Math II)

I’m applying as a computer science major for UC Davis.

UC Davis does not have any recommended SAT subject tests, so Math II is fine.

But it does help you when you take it?

To the best of knowledge, UC Davis states SAT subject tests can positively add to your application.
