Actually the UC application will require short answers to 4 of 8 questions instead the personal essays required these oadt ten years
Sorry typo: “these last 10 years” is what I meant to say.
Here are the 8 question prompts:
- Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time.
- Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you express your creative side.
- What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?
- Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.
- Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
- Describe your favorite academic subject and explain how it has influenced you.
- What have you done to make your school or your community a better place?
- What is the one thing that you think sets you apart from other candidates applying to the University of California?
So along with this questions and my essay, I’ll have a good chance with my current stats?
@icurryx3: No one here is an admission officer and can only really chance you based on your stats (SAT score and GPA). You have a chance but how good will depend upon the strength of your EC’s, answers to the questions along with your Stats. There is no reason not apply, but always have a couple of good backup schools you are wiling to attend if you UCI falls through.
Hi.
I have decided to switch my majro to Comp Science. With the stats mentioned in this post, what chance do i have?
Updated stats? CS is one of the more competitive majors, so you want to have stats at least at the average or higher.
For CS, High Match/Low Reach. Bumping up your test scores would be helpful.
Here are the 25th-75th percentiles for 2016:
GPA and test scores of middle 25%-75% students
High School UC GPA: 3.93 - 4.22
ACT Composite Score: 25 - 32
SAT Critical Reading: 530 - 670
SAT Mathematics: 590 - 740
My current GPA in school is a 4.4 and I hope to maintain it. Also, I am taking the ACT next month and my score will probably be a 29 or around that area. What do you think? I have also written my 4 answers to the insight questions.
What is your UC GPA? UCI does not care about your HS GPA, since the UC’s have their own formula.

Well, I still have a 3.79 UC GPA… I’m not sure if the senior year first sem grades get included in the UC GPA? Because if they do, it should increase to a 3.9.
Senior year grades are not included in the UC GPA. Your UC GPA is below the 25th percentile based on last year’s Freshman admission profile. For CS and UCI, you want above a 4.0 UC GPA. CS will be a Low Reach even if you get your ACT score up to a 29. Again this is all based on your academic stats, which are weighed heavily, but your EC’s and essays will contribute your chances so make sure they stand out.
Wow but Rogerhub calculator says I would have a 41% chance with a 29 on the ACT… I have a friend who got into UCI and will be attending this fall and he said I am more or less what his stats were and he got his first major choice which was CSE. What do you think?
I used Roger Hub for both my son’s after they got their acceptances. It was only right about 50% of the time.
2015 admit rate for a UC GPA of 3.4-3.79 was 49% but this only takes into account overall admit rate, no test scores, EC’s and essays nor competitive majors such as CS which will always have much lower acceptance rates. UCI is very GPA focused and can be more forgiving with lower than average tests vs. lower GPA’s.
I am not trying to discourage, just give you an idea of the competitiveness of the UC’s. I hope I am very wrong, but you need to make sure you apply widely and have several Match and at least 2 Safety schools on your list.
Wait so let me get this straight; since you said it’s a low reach, does that mean I have a good chance? Am I a favorale candidate?
HIgh Match/Low Reach means a 30-45% chance for an acceptance. Not favored to get an acceptance at this point with current stats.
Sorry the admit rate for UCI for 2015 with the UC GPA range of 3.4-3.79 was 16%. The 49% was for all UC’s not just UCI.

How do you say I’m not favoured? I have consistently shown an increase in GPA. I had a 3.2 gpa iN 9th grade and was able to increase it over the years. Even now, I have a 4.4. So all my hard work has gone down the drain? And 3.79 isn’t even that far from a 3.8, which has a 42% admit rate. And on the website you sent, it shows a 22% admit rate, not 16%.
Also, I’m volunteering at a library right now so I will hopefully have near 100 hours of community service by November. Will this increase my chances?
Admissions will note your upward grade trend and how well you are doing now. I am basing my opinions on Stats only and what is published. Did you select the Freshman admit rate on the right side and then HS GPA? I get a 16% admit rate for 3.40-3.79 GPA range.
You have asked for opinions and I have given mine. I am not an adcom but I do have experience with 2 son’s that gone through the UC admissions process. UCI is very stat driven, especially for GPA. I am not telling you that you have no chance and your hard work is not wasted. I am stating what the Freshman profile data shows as GPA and test score ranges. I am showing you what the UC admit rates are for UCI. EC’s and essays will also be considered and can make an impact. You need just have a list of schools with varying degrees of selectivity to make sure you are accepted into a CS program you want to attend.
