Can I get into UCR?

I am junior in high school and a Californian resident. I am really worried that I wont be able to get into any schools! The top four schools I want to go to are UCR, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Long Beach, or Cal State Fullerton. But I don't think I have a chances because of my grades.

I want to major in Media and Cultural Studies.

I will list below my grades throughout highschool so far.

The good news is that none of these four schools take freshman year into account. So I assumed 3.0 UW.

UCR: Match
Cal Poly Pomona: Low match/Match
CSUF: Low match
CSULB: Match

Your test scores look good but your GPA will be a problem. Are any of the courses you listed World History or US History etc… AP or Honors classes? For UC/CSU you can have an additional 8 points added to GPA if they are AP or Honors which would increase your GPA. I would work on getting better grades and retaking either the SAT or ACT to compensate for the GPA. At 3.0 GPA I think you are still a low reach for the schools.

As noted above, freshman grades are largely ignored by the schools you list. They also don’t count your non-college prep classes like PE. Even if you bring your 10-11 college prep GPA up to 3.0, I think you’ll find most of the schools you listed to be out of reach.

The CSUs only look your M&R SAT scores. Assuming your score was reasonably balanced - Cal Poly Pomona would probably take you. I encourage you to apply more broadly. Be sure to include some less selective CSUs. Maybe Sonoma and Channel Islands?

They’re all high matches.

I have not taken an APs
-So far my non weighted GPA is 3.1

-I am not allowed to go out of Southern California besides Santa Barbara

(What does high match mean?)

IDK.

FWIW, my son got waitlisted, then got into UCR with a very similar profile in 2011. Got into CPP, but no LB. ME, no AP’s before senior year. We are from NoCal.

You could consider the following CSU’s: Northridge, San Bernadino, Channel Islands, San Marcos if they have your Major and are still in Southern California.

majoring in media and culture studies is probably the stupidest thing you can do. Read the book Worthless by Aaron Clarey, and youll see why.
