Can I get into UCs?

I am currently a freshman at a California CC and am going to apply for UCs (UCLA - Bus Econ.,UCSD- Management Sciences, UCI-International Studies or Crim.). If everything plays out ideally, then I will have a 3.5 or a 3.55 GPA for my first year in CC. I asked the transfer counselor and he said that the calculated GPA you submit for UCs only include the grades from my first and second semester. Summer classes will also not be calculated. So if I get a 4.0 this spring semester, then the highest GPA I can achieve is a 3.5. So my question is, do I still have a shot at UCSD, UCLA, and UCI. Also what about USC as a Bus. major. Thanks!

Summer before you apply will certainly count.

Are you sure? The transfer center told me that it wont because I wont have the summer grade before applying. So I can't calculate it into my GPA.

It won't in your application GPA, but summer classes will certainly transfer- make sure they're only for IGETC though. I heard that major requirements in the summer term will not count.

Hooold on...

"the summer before you apply." NOT the summer before he transfers: BIG DIFFERENCE! Which one is it, Kenney? I was talking about the summer before you apply.

The summer before you apply WILL count, grades and all. You will be updating your application to also include the grades of the semester during which you apply (fall). If you apply for Fall 2007 admission, you will be applying in Fall 2006; your grades from Summer 2006 and Fall 2006 will count.

I was also talking about the summer before I apply. Like this is my spring semester. I only have my previous fall semester grades so far. So if I take courses this summer and I apply this upcoming fall will the summer grades be part of my calculated GPA when I apply this upcoming fall? I'm applying for admission for 2007 this fall.

Answer: YES. And so will the grades for that fall (you will supply them in an update). If someone told you otherwise they probably thought you were talking about the summer after you apply (like the previous poster did).

AHHH! I am freaking out. The highest GPA I can achieve will be a 3.5 if the summer courses don't count. I heard they only look at the fall and spring semester grades and if you get on the MAYBE list then they ask you for your 2nd fall grades to decide. HELP?

not meant to hijack but, do you have to convert ur semester units into quarter units? or do the ucs look at ur semester gpa

Your summer will be included. Your fall grades (the fall you apply) will be considered if they can help you; if you are obviously in or out without them, then some schools don't actually take them into consideration.

So to be safe I should take a few courses during the summer and try to Ace them all? Then my previous fall + spring + summer grades will be all be part of the GPA that the UCs look at to consider my admission? If I get on the MAYBE LIST then they take my 2nd fall grades to consider whether or not to let me in? Am I understanding it right? HELP ME GABE! haha sorry I'm just really freaking out here. =(

Yeah, that's pretty much it. But in the case of Berkeley, and very likely UCLA, they consider the fall grades REGARDLESS of whether you are on a "maybe list."

But the 2nd fall grades aren't part of the "CALCULATED GPA." Am I correct? So how will they consider that? How does this work? (Sorry if I' m not on the same page)

They are part for Berkeley (you fill in a Berkeley update form that includes fall and is used to calculate your gpa).

What about for UCI, UCSD, and UCLA? Also, will I have a good chance of getting into those schools with a 3.5?

UCI, UCSD--yes. UCLA will be very, very tough because of your choice of major.

I really hope so gabe. Again, I thank you so much for your help. =) Do you mind helping me in the near future?

I am here to help!

Ok, this is a question regarding a reply someone posted. I am currently a biochemistry major at a cc and would be applying in upcoming fall for the Fall 07 term at the UC's. I was planning to take physics during the summer but would it count? I do need it to transfer for that major but in all reality, there is no possible way i can take a bio class thats 3 hrs in the middle of the day on two days and then a chemistry class thats 5 hrs on the other two days and still fit physics which also runs extensively and therefore the only chance i have is either take the class during the summer or stay at the cc for like another year (which i dont want to since i will have my IGETC completed by the end of the fall 2006 semester). so again, will physics count if i take it during the summer? Thanks.

(sorry for the long rant but i wanted to clarify the reasons why i NEED to take it during the summer).

If you mean this coming summer (Summer 2006) then the answer is YES, that is fine. If you mean Summer 2007, then no.
