i am currently a junior going to be a senior, and i got a 26 on my act and a 1700 on my sat. my gpa high school way weighted is 4.666 n un weighted is 3.7
after finishing high school i would have taken about 7-9 AP classes and have extra cirricular activities also. is this enough? i was thinking maybe retake act and try to get around 29-32

as an FL resident,
i would say it's a toss up if you're in-state,
and if not then you're pretty much out of luck.

deff. retake the act or even the sat, whichever you prefer.

any EC's?
that's also very important since there will be many applicants with your similar stats and higher who could get an edge with their EC's, especially sports-related.

yes im in various clubs like nhs, snhs, and im in the bowling n tennis team

how do you have 7-9 AP's... are you in a magnet school where regular classes are counted as AP's? or are you just ridiculous in the classes you take? Is that weighted gpa the way UF would do it? if it is id say you should be in, but sat/act higher to be sure.

My S didn't make it into UF, and he was a 3.8-3.9 (their recomputed GPA), forgot which, 1410 SAT (cr/math), 32 ACT, and 10 AP's (all passed), a boatload of EC's, etc.

zebes

^your son probably had bad essays or recs

Id say its a reach. ur gpa is not the problem. ur SAT scores are. its still a possible reach though.

if you really want to go to FLorida then u should also (in my opinion) apply to others just in case.
Other possible options:
- UCF: Match/safety
- FSU: Match/safety
- UM: Reach (but still a possible reach). a little easier to get into than UF as UF is public and has a very stict policy on admitting OOS while UM is private and is easier on OOS kids.

BobMallet1,

Actually, he had great EC's, essays and recs, but that's neither here nor there. I just posted his stats to let the OP know the caliber of applications that were denied this year. At his High School it was a total crapshoot, in terms of who got in and who didn't.

zebes

ty all for tips =] im taking the ACT again or should i take the SAT?

Take the SAT. I will also be applying to UF and took the act 3 times and got consistent 27's. I took the SAT once and got a 1380/1600. You just never know about the tests u havent taken yet, regardless of how uve done on practice tests

well, university of Florida isn't an ivy league, nor is it really a top public school... As long as everything you have is good, you should get in

Admissions to UF has really changed recently, I have similar to zebes's son's stats and did not get in.

Were they in state?

If you don't mind my asking, what were your stats specify. Your stats page doesnt list much

The admissions policy has become a lot more stringent but to imply that someone with above a 1300 and at least a 3.8 on their scale WONT get in is just ridiculous, as long as you are in-state. Out of state applicants are subject to a much more loose approach to evaluating applications for whatever reason despite their denial of being tougher on OOS.

Also zebes, was your son applying in-state? My guess is no

Vincanity,

Yes, my S was in-state. Yes, he had a 3.8 ...something refigured by UF. He just got his AP grades over the phone; he passed his 10th AP exam (which gives him sophomore status at the university he will be attending) He had a SAT 1410 (cr/math), a 32 ACT, a part-time job for two years, marching band, FCA officer, Leadership University (in Orlando, Washington D.C., London/Oxford, Paris), he had more community service hours than I can count, two mission trips to Brazil, a leader in his youth group, etc. He had excellent recs from a Pastor, his boss, his guidance counselor, and his Physics teacher because he ended up tutoring kids from class. And, no ... he couldn't get into UF, but neither could several other kids in his high school class with similar stats. It was extremely competitive this year ... and I believe extremely competitive from our community, which traditionally send a great many to UF ... but not so many this year. S will be part of UCF's honors college with merit money. Again, I just posted these stats to make everyone aware UF is not a slam dunk anymore. Even my D who has a 4.0 u.w. is starting to worry what it'll be like by '09 when she applies.

Zebes

Part of me is very surprised to hear these stories, and part of me isn't. UF admissions can be very strange. From my school, many people with far lower stats are accepted...but they tend to favor our school, even over others in Gainesville. I have heard, however, from my friends in other parts of FL, that UF is seen as near-impossible to get into. To be honest, it makes me a little sad, because I believe that your S, and others like him, are almost certainly more qualified than some people who get in from my school...but I suppose that happens everywhere.
