p.s. is the campus nice there? there aren't many good pics on the website

anybody???

Poor scores/grades, little chance at top rated colleges. Michigan is relatively easy to get into. Our school sends about 15% of 200 kids there yearly. You shouldn't have any problems, just get your application in early, it matters.

Is this ^^^ guy on crack? Poor grades? Easy to get into U Mich?
I'm hoping this is so beyond sarcastic that I, the king of sarcasm, am having it blow right over my head.

1) U Mich is not only a top rated college... but it is top rated in nearly any major you can dream of. You're probably one of those freshmen that are hung up on Ivies Ivies Ivies... guess what? U Mich beats out the Ivies in many areas, including actually staying in contact with the real world (opposed to this Ivy fantasy land. Go watch a football game or something for god's sake... there's more to life than burying your head in a book, and in the real world, it will be those that realize that that will go furthest not only in success, but in happiness)

Do you know where HYP are on the engineering ratings? Business? Right next to and in some cases BELOW U Mich...
U Mich is top 10 in most majors.... So if he can get into Mich not only is he CAPABLE of getting into a top rated college, he IS getting into one.

2) This kid is Top 15 in his class... that's probably somewhere between top 5-8% of his class at least. He has a 5.3 weighted... 3.7 UW in the most rigorous courses he can take!!!!! Are you out of your mind!?!?! If your standards are so high that 15th is poor... you are going to have a long miserable life. Have fun while we "more normal" people not only have success but enjoy that success and the journey to it...

3) It is not easy to get into U Mich... check out the thread on the 10,000 kids accepted thus far this year (here on CC) and see what the credentials are....

Anyway ending rant Check out my chances thread bud... you'll have to click on my username and look under threads I've created or sift through my few posts but it will be helpful I believe. Check out my scores and EC's.

For you:
Cornell: Reach... it'll be tough, I wouldn't expect much but I hope you get it! Doesn't seem like the place for you...
Michigan: Match ( in many ways) if you take my advice below and it's to LSA you should be a wolverine with little worrying
Brown: Not going to happen to be blunt... depending on your race/gender especially.... this year I know that they were looking for perfection. Could change next year though, but I know a year ago it was the same... perfection was needed for Brown
Duke: Match but heavily leaning towards slight reach
UF: Apply early and you should have no problem, apply 3 hours before the deadline like soooommeone I know :D whoops :D and you'll end up waitlisted. (I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend the money to apply)

You seem to be VERY similar to me. Quick synopsis:

IB dimploma Candidate
3.798 UW
5.123 Weighted
1250ish SAT
15th in class
Soccer (Club and Varsity)

I Had similar EC's but more recognized out of school and in school organizations... I had many leadership positions though. President of NHS, VP of Student council, Corporate Sponsorship Comittee Chairman of our Relay for Life, Service Club steering comittee member... and more. So if anything, I may of had a small leg up on you there. All in All we seem to be pretty similar.

MY ADVICE: You do this and keep your grades up I can nearly promise you that you will get in... Do your application at the end of the summer. PLEASE do this, from someone who just went through this whole process... you WILL have an advantage and life will be SO MUCH EASIER. People gave me this advice, I said I would take it and I did not... I almost bit the bullet because of it.... It's advice I urge you to take. It's tempting to milk the summer for all it's worth but you'll thank me later, finish that app and send it in AS SOON AS THEY LET YOU. If you apply to LSA you should get in quickly and fairly easily, I applied to the college of engineering which is more difficult to get into: I was defferred and then accepted. It was probably a very close call with respect to me being accepted/rejected. I applied in November though...

As for preferred admit programs... that's a crapshoot. They are extremely selective so I wouldn't worry about it or expect anything there.

ESSAYS: I'd try and give them a little more of a personal story... maybe about your home situation. Having a single mom on a teachers salary, all that. Try and let them know who you are....

I REALLY want to see you get into Mich, you seem like my long lost year younger twin :D Seem like a good kid, with ambition, passion and determination... Just check out those online courses! That's deication to education! Show them YOU in those essays!

Honestly though wat's the deal?... I lived in FLA for 9 years until sophomore year, did HS soccer 3 years, Varsity Senior year... Went to leadership conferences, 15th in class basically same GPAs... are you living in my shoes or something! Well it's late and I'm exauhsted... starting to lose my spelling abilities and organization.

Hope I helped,
Ry

Cornell - Slight Reach / Reach
Michigan - Match
Brown - Reach
Duke - Slight Reach / Reach
UF - Safe Match

Michigan boasts 57% acceptance, if you are top 15% 30+ ACT and decent EC: you're in. Nothing tough.

in regards to the 1MX comment before, all i have to say is that i did my best and i literally booked my schedule to the point where i couldnt make those scores or grades any higher. As for the top 15 thing..right now im 15 out of 510 but after all the APs im taking next year, it should easily be top 6 or so with so many kids bailing out with cases of senioritis

as for tntny2fl, all i have to say is wow on that post...and ur stats are eerily simular to mine which is kinda freaky. I basically agree 100% on the whole Umich-ivy debacle..i mean im sure HYP is a step above michigan, but the likes of cornell and brown certanitly dont have too much of a leg up if any on umich.
After reading your post, it seems like you are certanitly a wolverine, and if you don't mind me asking-how is it there? Are the kids all dedicated and driven..are the doorms sh**ty? basically whats life like there and im kinda curious why you think cornell doesnt seem to be a match

p.s.
are there any good skiing spots up and around there, i doubt it, but i had to ask haha
thanks again for all your help
cj

1MX, your admissions information is out of date. In 2004, Michigan admitted a whopping 62% of applicants. In 2005, Michigan admitted, as you mentioned above, 57%. Last year, in 2006, Michigan admitted 47% of applicants. This year, Michigan admitted less than 45% of applicants. If the trend continues, Michigan will admit roughly 40% or so next year...possibly even less. Furthermore, the OP is OOS, which will make it a little bit tougher.

Getting into Michigan is definitely not easy.

Nothing within a thirty minute of Ann Arbor is "good" in my opinion. The best in Michigan in my opinion are up in Northern Michigan, for example Boyne Mountain or Crystal Mountain or Shanty Creek :).

Of course, these can't compare to Colorado :(

...from my school, our local rival and my old school in Florida.... that is far from the truth. Even for in staters, all I hear is that only the top students from each in-state high school have a shot at U Mich, and if you are not top of the line... start liking MSU. U Mich has become extremely hard to get into, their standards have been raised because of the ridiculous increase in applications over the past few years, especially this year. This is due to their appeal to SO many different people... it is "college" but also a very esteemed University that has the rankings behind it.

Besides that they have a ridiculous worldwide network and acedemic strength in engineering, med, law and business.... both undergrad and grad. This creates massive application because those that are undecided see they have options, those that are decided on a major see they can change and still be top ten in whatever they please and for those that are decided on goin to grad school, it's clearly a good option to go to their strong undergrad first.

Engineering, you have the humungous motor companies right next door. Medical, you have the first on campus coop hospital right there (it's humungous!), and a GREAT medical school to boot (talk about opportunities both in and outside of the classroom). For business, once again top 10, also the Michigan network is strong around the WORLD. For law, 8th law school... you have Y,H,S, NYU, Columbia, U Chicago, U Penn... then Mich. It is NOT a breeze to get into this school in the least bit, I don't know what statistics you are looking at but they must be outdated or straight up wrong. Mich is only taking the best of the best now-a-days from in state and out of state.

Here are REAL statistics from my high school... this isn't general, kindasorta numbers, these are real #s of real applicants from 153rd best public high in the nation...

Accepted acerages:
3.72 (clearly you must be in the most rigorous courses IB or AP)
this is a minimum of top 10%... must be top 10%
1384 SAT (old one)
1350 was just about the target point this year...
All of the applicants that got in this year either worked ridiculously within the school, student body and community while also participating sports. Normally you had to have worked massive hours in your projected major to be considered. We had the kid that is an EMT/son of a heart sugeon/ volunteers at the hospital many hours/ etc.

The band student... runs the school band, the orchestra... anything with music both in school and out of the school... he does it.

You have to be top of the line now... and be VERY active. Check out the what are my chances threads for U Mich and see how many top 15% 30+ ACT and Decent EC people are having U Mich called not only a slight reach... but a reach. Average excellence just doesn't cut it for such a popular school anymore.

Ry

umich is a great school-i mean why is that even a question-just look at the US News report for goodness sakes...im sure that kid still has the attitude of "ivy is god, the rest sucks" attitude..i mean-we all do at one point or another-but in the end you have to realizxze that just because a school dosent charge $40,000 a year, doesnt mean that you arent getting one of the elite educations the country has to offer

anyway..
how is life at UMICH tho.. are there a lot of things to do? how are the seasons up there (remember this is a florida boy-our seasons=summer)...the dorms good? and of course-how are the girls? the latter is a pretty big concern because after reading some of the cornell threads-its pretty obvious that there arent too many beyonces or angelinas crawling around elite schools..
thanks in advance for your time

This makes me depressed. I really want to get into some top schools but I did really bad on my ACT. But I have a good GPA, 3.9 unweighted, top 5% (weighted and unweighted), President of Two Clubs, Regional BPA Officer and Local BPA Officer, In speech for four years, Track for 1, Cross Country for 1, Link Crew 2 years, NHS 2 years, Mentor for kindergarteners 1 year, I took almost every AP class available except I took AP AB Calculus instead AP BC Calculus but on my ACT I got a 26.

And I have a part time job

@efemonak First of all, what is the point to response to a thread from 7 years ago. Second, there has been big changes in the admission to UMich in the last 7 years. The admission rate went much lower and the admission stat went a bit higher. ACT 26 is really too low for UMich (current mid 50 is 30-33) unless you are recruited or if you have a spectacular talent in music or something else. uwGPA 3.9 is not much higher than admission average either.
