Can I get into UNC Chapel Hill?

I am a rising senior living in NC and am looking at colleges now. I have about a 4.21 weighted GPA. My class rank is 3/350. I have taken AP English (B), AP US History (B), AP Government (A), and AP Psychology (A) so far when it comes to AP classes. I am taking AP Stats and AP Earth & Environmental this year. My SAT score, taken once, is a 1700 (I have been studying my ass off everyday to get that up to a 1900-2000 range). I have over 200 hours of volunteer service in a local sunday school. I am a 3 year varsity soccer player and 2 year varsity tennis player. I am part of Senior Class Council, TRU Club, president of the Leadership Development Organization, and College Club.

I am trying to get into either UNC Chapel Hill (1st choice) or NC State (2nd choice). UNC has been very inconsistent when it comes to accepting people. I know a friend who had a 1990 on his SAT, did volunteer work, took about 7 or 8 AP classes and got very high grades. He did not get accepted into UNC. Another friend of mine got an 1810 on the SAT, did more volunteer work than the other, took 6 AP classes, and got fairly high grades (about the same as mine). He got into UNC. They are both minorities. How did friend #1 not get in and friend #2 did?

What can I do to improve my chances of getting into UNC Chapel Hill/NC State? Am I on track to get into Chapel Hill? Am I on track to get into NC State? Other than the obvious of raising my SAT score, what else can I do to improve my chances?

Thanks for your time!
-Sam

I am in the same boat as you. I’m not a senior, but I was wondering the same thing - I am trying to learn what to do now so that I’ll be better my chances of going to Chapel Hill! Good luck, Sam!

Being instate you’re in if you get your SAT scores up.

Try ACT with Writing to see if you score better. UNC doesn’t care if it’s SAT or ACT with W.

Test Scores – 25th / 75th Percentile:

SAT Critical Reading: 590 / 700
SAT Math: 620 / 710
SAT Writing: 580 / 680

ACT Composite: 26 /31

The bottom 25% is probably for athletics or special development candidates so you just have to forget that. Obviously the better your numbers are, the higher chance you get admitted. But no one can/should tell you if you’re in or not. They are, after all, not admission officers.
