I really want to go to UNC-CH. It is my top choice. I am a junior at the best academic public high school in my state and am somewhat worried about getting in. As of right now, I have a 3.75 unweighted GPA (the semester is about to end and this GPA will likely drop to a 3.7) and a 4.375 weighted (will likely be a 4.45 after this semester). I have above average SAT scores of 650 math, 640 reading, and 590 writing. I have never studied for the SAT and will take a course that will help boost me to above 2000 on my composite. I haven't taken the ACT yet. I am also on the varsity dive team this year and was MVP freshman year and captain this year (we won state championships the past two years), BETA club, ambassador for my school, I am in NHS, ran 3 years of JV cross country so far, and started my own philanthropic club which has raised about 1000 dollars for St. Jude hospital. I am taking 4 AP's this year. I live in NC. I'm worried about GPA.

Hi, I am applying to UNC CH this year!

First off, your gpa is fine. Plus, Your EC’s are looking good. Make sure you do well on the AP exams and maybe even try to take 5-6 AP classes jun and sr years. Also, try to gain more leadership positions. So far, you’re looking alright in that aspect. Put most of your focus into the SAT/ACT. You still have time to make good scores, but you need to take PREPARATION for those tests very seriously. Very few people can just go into the test with little preparation and make 35’s and 2300’s. You need to aim for at least a 33 or 2100. I think those scores should guarantee you admission into UNC. Personally, I found the ACT to be easier than the SAT, but it’s all preference. I know colleges will usually say that ACT/SAT scores are only a factor, but they are a HUGE factor. Just a 2000+ will not guarantee admission. You need a score in the 98-99% for either test. This will greatly improve your chances. Good luck.

Test scores are huge at Carolina. Aim for above a 2000 (SAT) or above 30 (ACT) and that will help a lot. I’d say a 32 or 2100 would put you in a very good place. Your GPA is a little bit low unweighted, but you should be fine as long as you have nothing lower than a B on your transcript.
