USC School of Cinematic Arts is my absolute dream school. I'm applying to the Film & Television Production major.
I have a:
4.0 Unweighted GPA
I will have taken 5 AP Classes (1 last year, 4 this year, and i got a 5 on the one i took last year.)
All of the rest of my courses have been honors.
I have numerous extracurriculars, many of which relate to Filmmaking.
I started a Cinema Club at my school, which is a dedicated art school in Georgia in which I am a communications (video production) major.
I have a 2020 on the SAT (superscored). This is the part i'm a bit worried about, should I be? I received a 670 on CR, 630 on Math, and 720 on writing.
As far as my cinematic arts supplement goes, I'd say its pretty solid. The portfolio list and visual sample (5 minute film) are very strong, and my personal statement and creative writing sample are relatively strong too.
I'm getting letters of recommendation from my Video Production teacher, (which should be excellent) my Graphic Design/Photography teacher (also pretty good), and one from my English teacher, who's class I got an A in and received a 5 on the AP test in. Hopefully this recommendation will be good too.

Please let me know if you think I have a good chance of getting in, i'm really hoping i get accepted. Also, I'm applying to NYU tisch so if you think I have a good shot there too, let me know. (as you can see, USC is my number one choice). I'm also applying to UCLA and UCBerkeley.

Still bumping? The USC and UCLA film schools are among the most competitive- you can imagine every film kid in the world wants to go there or NYU or a limited number of others. If the quality of your budding work is good, you have a better shot than all the kids who just dream of film and have done zip. Your solid academic work will help.
Hope your maturity showed through in the app and your reasons for wanting this program came across as solid and well-considered. You sound like a legit applicant, but a number of schools, incl UCLA, only allow you to declare this as a junior- at that point, competition can again be fierce. Best of luck.

Not sure if you’re still interested, but from what I gather, USC’s SCA programme seems to put as much, if not more, weight on the portfolio than grades-- of course, that might just be my paranoia showing through. As for how competitive it is to get in, it also depends on which area of concentration you applied for.(just curious, might I take a look at your portfolio?)

I’m applying for film & television production. And for confidentiality, upon consideration i feel like putting my portfolio out there right now isn’t a great idea. Are you applying to sca?

I’m not entirely sure of the admissions process (as I’m still trying to get a grasp on this myself) but you seem like a good candidate, to say the least. I think, as it is with most film/art schools, someone with a brilliant portfolio but, say, so-so grades has a much better chance of being accepted compared to someone that has no experience, very little in a portfolio, but has a 4.0 GPA and a 34 on the ACT. Catch my drift? Basically, if you have a stunning portfolio, good letters of rec, good personal essay/statement, and good grades (which it looks like you do), then I think you’ll be considered.

I know you said you don’t feel comfortable with showing your portfolio, but that’s really what’s going to make or break you. As a high school student myself, and as someone who’s more or less grown up around the industry, I’d love to give you feedback. As I am an ‘artist’ myself, if you will, I completely understand how you feel in regards to people stealing, etc. Trust me when I say I have absolutely no intentions in doing that, and, if you ever feel you’d like your portfolio reviewed by some fresh eyes (though, like I said, I’m just a kid myself so take what I have to say with a grain of salt), I’d be more than willing to help you in any way I can.

I have family that’s gone through USC SCA and a few good friends that have as well. It’s a really crazy program and their admissions seem to be erratic. What I mean by that is that you can’t really profile or type their SCA admitted students. They all are so different with many things to offer- which is a good thing when it comes to working with people and getting to know others and their styles- but you can’t just look at someones work or their transcript and say, “Oh yeah, they’re going to get in for sure.” There are some people admitted because they have beautiful cinematography in their shorts, and others that are admitted because they have a good personal essay. Some get admitted based on good storytelling, even if it isn’t visually or technically perfect. You just don’t know. The most anyone can say is that you’re a good candidate, which I personally feel you are. Good luck, and maybe I’ll see you in a few years!

You seem like you have a great chance of getting in. The perfect GPA is definitely going to be a great contributor to your application, but there is a chance that the SAT could hurt you. If you bring that score up to 2150ish, you would have an amazing shot at all the schools you mentioned.

Berkeley and UCLA are reaches for anyone, but with a high GPA and a bit higher SAT, you’d have a great chance. NYU shouldn’t be too difficult to get in, and with USC, bring up that SAT and it would almost definitely be a match.

Unfortunately, I am done taking the SAT, so those are my final scores. Thanks for the input everybody! Clairbutlerfilm, i sent you a private message with my video.
