Can I get into UT Austin's McComb's school of Business?

Hi I’m a senior in high school in the Houston area and I really wanted to go to McCombs next year. I was wondering if anyone had insight on my chances of getting in with my class rank as bad as it is.

Rank 150/614 (top 24%)
GPA 3.65 UW/ 5.33 W
SAT with writing 2090/SAT II: Chemistry: 720 Math Level 2: 730 and I might take spanish with listening (I’ll get at least 770)
ACT: 31 I can take it again i guess.
AP’s: 4’s on Chem/H.Geo/Psychology/English and 5 on Spanish Lang
My EC’s… 4 years of Tennis (JV/Varsity levels), 4 years of Debate and Speaking (Two years as Club Secretary), reaching the state level in LD two years in a row and planning on doing it my senior year too, UIL Extemporaneous speaking district finalist, Student Council President and 4 year member (Junior class Secretary and Executive President my senior year), DECA International qualifier and placing among the top 10% internationally… Any ideas are welcome!

Your ECs are great, but that rank is going to be tough to overcome. All you can do is try. Write a very good essay C. Read up on CAP and Pace and decide if you want to do those since you are likely to be offered one of those programs.

Yeah I figured… Would I be better off applying for an easier major for UT Austin and then transferring? Would my chances go up very much if I did that rather than applying to McCombs? I was also wondering if you knew anything about my chances of getting into Rice. I know it’s even more of a reach, but I visit there almost every other week, which according to most people I talk to who’ve been accepted there say it’s really important to show interest in the University, and my older brother is attending this year which may help out a bit.

You could try for a less competitive major. The issue with that is that to internally transfer into McCombs you will need a very high GPA after freshman year. In the 3.7 to 3.8 range. You should not let any of this deter you from applying. You are bringing a lot to the table and you never know if you will be what they are looking for in holistic admissions. Just have a plan B.

I don’t know much about Rice, sorry.

thank you so much! this helps a lot
