Can I get into William and Mary?

I already applied ED to W and M, and was deferred, but my guidance conuselor called up their office and the response was that I was on the fringe of acceptance, and that the ED application pool was extremely competitive (too competitive for me I guess)

750 Math, 710 Verbal
790 Writing, 720 Math IIC, 650 Physics
AP Physics 4
90.3 GPA unweighted, 94.5 average for first quarter of senior year, school does not weight grades or rank class, however, I think I'm in about the 30th percentile of my grade. Yes, my grade is ridiculous.

Junior year: Precalculus, AP Physics , English 11 Regents, Spanish 4, Global History
I only finished my AP Physics course with a 75 average, but started with a failing average, then improved average by 30 points. My physics teacher wrote one of my recommendations, and throughout the year he was obviously very impressed with my improvement.

Senior year: AP Calculus AB, AP European History (moved up from regular class), AP English (moved up from regular class), Sociology
1st quarter averages for AP Classes: Calc 96, English 93, Euro 90

Participation in band for whole life (saxaphone) - 12th grade section leader
Wind Ensemble- 11th, 12th
Jazz Band- 11th
Jazz Ensemble (better group)-12th
Math Team-11th, 12th
Tutoring (volunteer)-11th, 12th
JV Soccer-9th, 10th
Freshman Basketball-9th
Joint proposal and development of digital music creation club (lost somewhere in the school's bureaucracy)

Both of my essays are very good and I am pretty sure both of my recommendations are good also.

Although William and Mary didn't adequately describe why I wasn't accepted in the ED round, they made it clear that they were impressed by my recent improvement in school and my SAT scores. They also made it fairly clear that one of their main concerns was with whether I could keep up my new relatively high average. If I get similar grades for the second quarter, do you guys think I can get in in the regular round?
Thanks for any response.

Continue doing what you're doing and I think you're in

Yeah, I think you have a good shot.

ok. thanks guys. i'm really nervous about it.

thats really scary..i dont get why you didnt get in early..did you have bad earlier highschool grades?

yeah, most of my earlier grades were in only about the high 80s or low 90s. And I wasn't in a honors history or english class until this year.

are you in-state or out? that makes a tremendous difference, if you are in I don't understand, but if you're out I can see why they might have deferred you. still, very good chances for rd I think

good luck! maybe I'll see you there ;)

yeah. sorry i forgot to mention. i am out of state. That is extremely important.

dont' worry your sat is extremely high. Your In and i will guarantee it. not really but.

W&M is very fussy about GPA - the best thing you can do is keep up your GPA for RD. Best of luck for the next round!

ok. thanks for your responses.

Oh, and one more question. I'm still looking for another stretch school. With these stats, is Duke completely out of the question? And if it is, do you have any other stretch school recommendations?

Your gpa/class rank will also be an issue at Duke, but there's always a change. What is the rest of your list like?

Besides maybe Duke and a definite William and Mary app., there's:

Franklin and Marshall
University of Richmond
James Madison

and another safe school which I still haven't decided on.

Well, you have reaches and safeties, then. What are you interested in majoring in? What part of the country do you want to attend school in?

I don't really have a decided major; I put down on the common app that I'm interested in math, computer science and economics.
I live in New York and I want to go to school anywhere on the east coast between New York and North Carolina excluding upstate New York.

If you like W M, Duke and Richmond, you should check out Wake Forest.

Wake Forest is a good suggestion. Maybe also BU, Brandeis, Vasser, Trinity (CT).

I think any SUNY branch sounds like a match.

i read about most of those and ruled them out for this reason or another, but thanks for your suggestions.
