Chances of me getting into William & Mary?W&M is my dream/reach school and because it's my reach school you can probably guess my academic credentials are not up to par with what they expect. I do participate in extracurricular activities that I have a true passion about. My statistics arent horrible but they're not what they usually take. I do imerse myself in several AP classes. I'm in four this year and was in three last year. I've conveyed my interest in the school by contacting my admissions counselor and the department chair of my major. I guess my real question is, do selective schools take chances on students if they show initiative and a willingness to improve? Have you ever heard of an underqualified student get in to a top school and not due to sports?

What are your actual academic credentials like? GPA, SAT/ACT?

@Catria GPA 3.2 Unwieghted and 4.0 wighted. ACT 26.

I’d say low reach. A considerable amount of kids from my high school end up going to William and Mary. Your ACT and GPA are a little low, but if you rock your essays and interview you should be able to compensate that. Make 100% sure that your teachers and counselor mention that you are on an academic rise in their recommendations. Also, make sure that they say how you have incredible potential and your creative way of thinking will benefit any campus. What are your extracurriculars?

Your GPA and ACT are quite low. You have a chance but its a reach
good luck, chance me

@Pleaseandthanks
I dedicate all of my time outside of school to three main activities. I’m the vice president of Interact Club which is a volunteer group at my school. I’m a student leader of PSI which is another volunteer group at my school. And I dedicate the most time out of the three to the orchestra program. I’ve been in it since Freshman year and I’m the section leader of the viola section in the top string ensemble.

W&M: Reach (W&M, like any Virginia state school, will use weighted GPA)

Thanks everyone!

If I take the SAT and do well on it, could that help? It’s in March and they release decisions in April, would that even make sense?

I would ask W&M Admissions, and a rep frequents this board, but my guess is it would be too late. It generally takes the CB two to three weeks to release scores. With a March 8 test date, that would mean scores would be out @3/22 at the earliest, most likely at least a few days later. I think that is probably cutting it a little close, but the only ones who can tell you are the folks at W&M.

@W&M Admission

Could I get your opinion?

I think you have a good shot if your ECS and essays are good. Honestly I think if your a good canidate they can overlook a number

Are you a VA resident? There is a back door entry to William & Mary called
“The Richard Bland College of William and Mary.” It is in Petersburg, about 40 miles from the actual William & Mary and 25 miles in the other direction to Richmond. It has dorms and it’s campus is an old plantation. The tuition is the same as a community college but the room and board are the same as a four year school. There is an agreement with William & Mary that if you graduate with a 3.25 you will be admitted to the “real” William & Mary. If you graduate RB with a 2.5 you can get in to VCU. I found this place while researching colleges my freshman daughter can get into with her presently appalling grades.

I am now a VA resident, so that probably wouldn’t work, but thank you! I just asked my AP English teacher to write my recommendation, so that’s good news haha.
