tbh, no. It will be difficult. Get your rank higher and ACT better then maybe. I had a 34 ACT was top 6 in my class and played a rare instrument (relatively) and was rejected by all of them. A great personal outside of the box essay may change that though

Never say never, but based on what I saw with my students this year, I would say, VERY DIFFICULT. You have a couple of axes against you - 1) ACT score low - 32 is low… 2) Rank - better not to have it than being at or outside top 5% of grad class 3) ECs - nothing stand out - you have all the pedestrian type of ECs among applicants to these schools 4) Asian 5) Volunteering/National Awards (I mean substantial volunteering not just working at the hospital reception desks or tutoring kids//awards mean notable National ones, not the who cares NMF, NHS. AP distinct scholar kind). Ivy leagues are reaches for everybody unless they have the right hook (URM, 1st gen, dirt poor life struggle stories or Intl student from a dinky little country with few students from the same place to complete in the application pool). JMHO.

@ANormalSeniorGuy Sorry about your experiences

Anyways OP, I would say that you have a chance, probably about the same as most other qualified applicants. Being in the top 10% of your class is usually good enough, and you’re within the top 4%, which is where I was at when I got into Brown. A 32 is not outstanding, and puts you just slightly below average. Get it up to a 33 or higher; a 35 will put you within the top quartile of those schools so shoot for that if you can. You have demonstrated leadership (which is good), but very cookie-cutter ECs. If you can, try to see if you can do something special this summer, especially since it will help you tremendously when writing your personal statement/supplementary essays.
As for national awards, I don’t really think they a ‘soft’ requirement (well maybe they are for Yale). At the Brown admitted students party I went to for instance, many of the people I talked to did not receive large, attention-grabbing awards.
Regardless, you still need to have safeties since these schools are high reaches for all applicants, and many students with better stats than you will get rejected. But also realize that some with lesser stats will get in as well.

I think you have a chance at Brown if you raised your ACT score to a 35 and applied ED. But, if you’re set on yale/ princeton/ columbia, its going to be a lot harder. I noticed that you were of low income though, which might help: are you a Questbridge scholar?

@AshleyMisAwesome @beepybeetle i am also planning on applying to brown because of its very open academic structure and flexibility. And no i am not a Quest bridge Scholar because i honestly did not even know that existed until this year. I also have like 3 or 4 safeties that are instate so i am pretty secure there. I know these are reach schools and i probably have like 0.01% chance of getting in, but i think i would regret it if i just don’t take the risk and see how happens. I have many instates and my out of states include

Brown
Columbia
Princeton
Stanford
Yale
Duke
Georgetown
UChicago
Northwestern
UVA
Upenn
Washington and Lee

What are you majoring in?

@collegeboundprogrammer I am planning on majoring in International Relations

Questbridge opens this summer for students matriculating Fall 2018 so you should apply.

That ACT score is low for HYSPC and Duke and U CHicago I would take ACT and SAT and try for equally good scores.

Can you take a prep class and get your ACT up? A few points could make a difference…

agree with above, the ACT score is definitely low for HYPS, Penn, Columbia, Chicago and Duke.

OP, unfortunately for an unhooked applicant, the acceptance rate at these super reach schools is 5-10% even if you profile in the top-25%. So, yes take a shot if you are able to get to that place as it looks like you have worked hard to be able to do so, and then make sure you have a great mix of target, reach (not just super reach) and safety schools that you would be happy at.

D has 2350 SAT, 36 SAT, 4.9 wgpa, valedictorian at a top 5 public HS in CA, great recommendation letters, NMF, multiple awards (national, state, local and school), level 12 CM, lots of leadership positions and lots of volunteer hours. She has no hooks. Rejected by Yale, UPenn, Williams, Wellesley, and Swarthmore. Waitlisted by Havard. Accepted to Columbia, Stanford, Amherst, Pomona, Rice, UCB, UCLA, USC (full ride) and UCSD.

It is difficult to get into the top schools with what we thought were outstanding stats. Suggestion for you would be to look at the accepted profile of past admitted students for each school your interested in and maybe look for schools that would fit your profile after you hopefully raise your test scores. Work really hard on your essays by showing who you are, don’t try to impress the admit officer, they have been around the block several times. D got into Columbia and Stanford because of her essays. Good luck but honestly most of the schools you listed are super reach for your current stats.

Make sure to have a huge spike. That means spending a lot of time on EC’s that are heavily related to International Relations. You need to show deep achievement in that field. While leadership positions are impressive (and you have positions EC’s related to your major), you also need to show that you have awards and achievements related to your major.

Many people say that shooting for these Ivy colleges is complete luck. That is only true if you do not have a hook. A hook will make your chances far higher. Make sure also, on a related note, to take subject tests.

Good Luck.

Here on CC we give this advice:

Find a safety and a match that you LOVE! Spend more time worrying about those colleges…make sure you have colleges with a very good chance of acceptance AND that you can afford.

But go ahead and apply to Ivies as well!

YES YES YES!!! find a FEW safeties and matches you love, very important! Many kids don’t take these categories seriously and you should.

Just remember your competing within your subgroup which includes race/sex/socioeconomic condition/ domestic vs international. At each college your chances are “different” based on how many in your group apply to that college. Do a lor of research in your top few choices and you can really help yourself.
