I'm a junior in high school wondering if I can get into Pitt

My GPA is a 3.3 unweighted and 3.55 weighted (i've taken 12 semesters of hnrs classes and 4 of AP classes so my high school does give much in weighted gpa). My frosh year was Bs and Cs but we had a immpossible grade scale which changed but my high school won't change those grades why I don't know. My soph. and junior years are all As and Bs

I've got a 1240 on the SAT (650 math/590 critical reading).

I would be a legacy with my Dad having gone to Pitt and my grandmother, uncle, and aunt getting their masters at Pitt.

I don't have too many ECs i am on the football team in a 5A school (I wouldn't recieve an athletic scholarship though) and I'm in a couple of clubs. I thinking of doing volunteer work this summer to boost this.

The old grading scale
A+ = 100
A = 99-95
A- = 94-93
B+ = 92-91
B = 90-87
B- = 86-85
C+ = 84-83
C = 82-76
C- = 75-74
D+ = 73-72
D = 71-67
D- = 66-65
F = 64 and below

hi there!

i think you definitely have a decent shot at getting into pitt.

Just make sure you explain when applying how your school used to do grading. Because if admissions see the B’s and C’s…but see that theoretically they are A-'s and B’s, they’ll understand the discrepancy.

if I were you though, I would think about taking the SAT one more time, try bringing up your scores.

good luck with admissions in the fall! :)

Just want to add - Apply Early! It’s rolling admissions so it seems the earlier you apply the better.

dinger, my son was accepted to Pitt with almost identical stats. Same weighted and unweighted GPA (with approx. 15 honors courses) and 1200 SAT (640 and 560). He was also a varsity football player and had quite a few ECs including a part-time job and volunteer work.

He also submitted the optional essay, sent a separate email with all his ECs, attended a summer overnight (I believe it was called Ready, Set, Pitt) and applied in July before his senior year. I agree with DonnaMom, that applying early was probably the key.

Good Luck! My son is really looking forward to Pitt!

Sure, you have a shot. A few things come to mind:

1 - That grading scale was actually prevalent through most of the country through the 1970s, more or less. We’ve had grade and score inflation since.

2 - Regardless, your grades follow an upward trend over time. That’s a strong point.

3 - Don’t discount football as an EC. Any sport is every-day commitment during the season, plus off-season conditioning, whether you are a star athlete or not. It shows discipline, teamwork and focus. In my opinion it outweighs membership in a dozen clubs.

During the summer, prep as much as you can for the SAT and take it again in the fall. I don’t think volunteer hours would mean anything; it’s just more ticket-punching.

First off thanks to all those who have replied. Secondly would it help my chances with a decided major (biology/pre-med) or to apply undecided.
