Hello all, does anyone know if my chances for a merit scholarship would change if I decided to major in dance? Im thinking of a double major as well - in English or writing. Im not sure how that will effect my merit chances. I have a 4.1 gpa and a 32 on my act and will graduate this year passing 5 AP courses, AP Bio- AP Euro History- AP Eng and Comp- AP Stats and Ap Physics and a dual credit Honors Spanish. My education depends on getting
merit aid but I also would like to continue dancing. Should I enter school as an undecided major? Where are my best chances for a really good merit scholarship?
Thanks for any help - its a very overwhelming time with lots of decisions to make!

Alabama, which has a very fine dance (and theatre) program, will give you free tuition for your stats…and you certainly can choose dance as your major. That award is for ANY major.

Apply now and you’ll have your acceptance AND scholarship award in your pocket within a week after the school receives transcripts and scores. The app is super easy…takes like 5 minutes…no essays, no LORs. Bama admits by stats, GPA, and HS curriculum.

BTW…you might ALSO be given a Talent scholarship as well. Bama does allow stacking of merit.

This is the award that you would get as an OOS student. The amount does increase as tuition increases, so that is a good thing!!

PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLAR

A first-time freshman student who meets the December 15 scholarship priority deadline, has a 32–36 ACT or 1400–1600 SAT score (critical reading and math scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will be selected as a Presidential Scholar and will receive the value of tuition or $99,800 over four years ($24,950 per year).

Both of my kids have merit aid and it did not depend on their majors. One is a theater major and also got a talent award.

It depends on the college. Some schools on,y award talent awards to dance majors, and not other academic merit. Some schools give both kids of awards.

If you are majoring in dance at some schools, this will require an audition…and any performance reward will be based on your audition.

Check the policies at each school.

@luna999 how much merit do you need?

In other words, how much will your family pay?

For instance, if you and your parents can come up with $15k per year ($6k-10k from parents, $5k-9k from a student loan & student job), then you will need a full tuition award.

If your family is low income, then you would qualify for a Pell Grant which would also help a little bit. If you have a 0 EFC, then you would get a grant of about $5700 in addition to any merit.

Let us know your situation so we can better direct you.

thank you all for your help…my parents will try for a 5k loan per year. Ill be working over the summer and may try and get an on campus job. Ive known that a scholarship will be necessary for me to attend college which is why ive worked so hard to get a high act and high gpa.

Is your family low income? If so, then you may qualify for a Pell Grant.

In addition to the full tuition award that you would get from Bama, you could also audition for more money for dance. Yes, this add’l money will STACK on top. You could end up with a full ride.
