Can I go in with only one course scheduled?

I ask if it's okay to go into the Fall semester with only 2 units (typo in title) because I've been placed on the waitlist for the other 5 that I really want. I'm hoping that in the first week people will drop out of those courses and a seat will be available (the one I REALLY want, I'm #19 on the waitlist...is there ANY hope at all? For the others, I'm #6, 7, 11...is there a a chance?) Is this common, and is it wise to do what I might do?

Bad, bad, bad idea. Schedule yourself into some classes that you wouldn’t be thrilled to take, but that you CAN take in case you don’t get into any others. Even if you get into 3 out of those 5 classes, that still puts you under the credit amount to be considered a full-time student, which means you’d lose your finaid and probably need to overload in other semesters to make sure you graduate on time.

As for the waitlists - what are the class sizes on those classes? And what college is each one in? Then we might be able to tell you how likely you are to get in. For example, a WL of 17 on a 20 person class = “no chance,” but a WL of 17 in a 120 person lecture is not bad at all.

Absolutely not…way too dangerous. I’m surprised an advisor hasn’t poked about and noticed your problem. One wait list maybe 2 classes-- assuming you still have signed up for 34 units to have full time status. Check OLR daily.

If it’s just the “time” of a class you cannot get into, sign up for another section NOW and then email the professor-- see if s/he will switch you. I’ve heard that many profs will add you beforehand if you are persistent.

I’m assuming you have SOME required classes, in which case, you need to sign up for those, even if the time is not one you want. Lots of wiggle room with electives…but required classes, unfortunately – you must sign up for these at another time with an open seat. There are reserved spots for all required classes. For example, if you’re in SCS, email an advisor and get a seat in the computer and math classes. If you’re in MCS, likewise on math.

What college are you enrolled in?

Wow, 2 units. That’s incredibly low. My roommate took 33 last semester with a gym class of 3 so he qualified for full time student status. He had like no work. Let alone 2… Jokes aside, yeah, sign up for a few Gen Ed classes as backup. You’ll need them anyways. Everyone needs them.

Did you mean 2 classes?

If so, that’s probably about 18-21 units. You need 36 for full-time student status. Just get to 36 units in classes you can definitely get into before you worry about any WL stuff…

Thanks you guys.

I went ahead and filled out my schedule with mostly Gen Ed and other recommended courses, just at different times than originally planned. The courses with subjects I really wanted (Freshman Seminar, Interpretation & Argument, 2 elective art classes) I chose to stay on the waitlist for. I’m number 17 and 19 on the waitlist for of a class of 20-ish in Art, so I’m not getting my hopes up. For Freshman Seminar and Interp, I’m #6 on the waitlist, so maybe.

And I’m enrolled in HS&S. My Advisor and CC have been huge helps. Thank you again, and anymore advice on the matter is greatly appreciated.

You probably won’t get into interp. I was #2 on the waitlist for a 76-101 section once and couldn’t get in. Most of the time your only hope is if the class size is flexible, then the professor can just let people in freely. For classes like interp, there is a hard limit on the number of students, and people aren’t really going to drop out.

Mine let in 4-5 people off the waitlist and went over the class limit by a few kids. So I guess the experience is variable. Then again, I was taking the “Evil in America” topic, which was popular enough that they subjugated the “History” topic and turned it into “Evil in America with Historical Context” so more kids could take it.
