Can I go to any undergraduate school and get into medical school if I get excellent grades, have a good interview and good extracurricular activities.

I'm African-American and I really like the school North Carolina A&T (an hbcu - historically black college/university). I know Xavier (Louisiana) puts the most African-Americans into medical school but I would be happier attending N. C. A&T.

Thats like me asking if I can make it to the NBA if I play bball at Georgia Southern University (which doesn’t have a good bball program) and if I am averaging 9 assists a game, blocking 2 shots a game, shooting 80 percent from the field, shooting 90 percent from the free throw line, playing amazing defense, and managing to dunk the ball 5 times a game. The answer is yes, I can, but will it be easy to do (like getting excellent grades, having a great interview, and amazing EC’s). No…

NCA&T is one of the best hidden gems. It offers a large physical campus, with a brand new school of nanoengineering, a fab school of engineering with small class sizes (15-20), a population of 4000 undergrads and a huge amount of school spirit from current students and alumni. It provides a top undergraduate experience with state tuition prices that are lower than most states’ community college prices.

Some of UNC-CH SOM prof’s and previous deans have all graduated from A&T, same with ECU’s Brody.

A&T has been awarded some very large grants recently for research. And allow students to participate early on in your academic career.

Their prices for meal plans and housing are some the lowest in the country and yet some of the very nicest. And this comes from a mom with kiddos who attend/recently graduated from the ivies, service academies, other UNC schools and other OOS publics.

I cannot say enough about this one particular school. A&T has a wonderful reputation here in NC and specifically within the sciences. And again the school pride is remarkable.

Congrats and best wishes for A&T. Do well there, enjoy and take your pre-reqs for med school and get involved.
