Can i guarantee living on West campus?

After frosh year when I move off of east, could I guarantee that I live on West campus? I hate central, how open it is-its way more sketchy at night than any other area on campus-don't sororities have sections of dorms on West, and since i want to join one anyways, do sororities get guaranteed housing on west for sophmore through senior years? How exactly does it work?

I suggest you do your homework. That information is available in print publications (maybe even the duke.edu website....)

Sororities do not get guaranteed housing, only fraternities.

So what about if you're an independent trying to get a single on West after sophomore year? I most likely won't have anyone to room with next year (they actually randomly assigned someone to room with me this year since I wasn't able to find anyone). Is there a chance I'll be forced off campus if they run out of singles, since I won't have any roomies for Central?

I am curious about why you we thinking about this, and know so much about this already. Is there something I might like to know? (parent of a freshman ....)

Shrinkrap, she obviously don't know all that she would know, had she taken time out to read the literature. Seems like somebody is already fitting into the "sorority girl" mode....

blahfishcakes: If you don't think you can find a roommate but want one, there are many ways you can get one. There was one girl in my freshman hall who found her sophomore roommate by going to some roommate-finding event run by Campus Council. I think the one thing she knew she had in common with her roommate was being pre-med, lol. So, you can find one easily.

My other piece of advice would be to keep up with your friendships at Duke. You will find that even acquaintances are willing to take you as a roommate. A good portion of people don't room with their best friends!

Some people made a Facebook group last year for people looking for roommates.

I actually have a single this year (I'm a sophomore) BUT I am also in a frat- so that helped.

Sophomores haven't been offered singles for at least the last 3-4 years that I have been here. It is possible if you are in one of the SLG's, fraternities, or theme housing (Wellness/sub-free or Arts communities). If you really want a single, I would recommend applying for one of those or you won't get one. If you can't get a roommate, there are matching events or one will be assigned for you after transfers, etc. get worked out over the summer. You will not be pushed off campus, as housing is guaranteed.

Personally I hated living on West - the dorms aren't nice at all (at least on the main quad) and haven't been renovated forever. There is also no A/C on some of them and the rooms are small with dark and dingy hallways, etc. That will change soon hopefully.

I never lived on Central but I recommend it if you have that as an option.

When do students start working on sophomore housing?

law_applicant: That's true for a lot of the West dorms but that isn't the case for Keohane, :D

Next year, I believe Crowell will be the only quad without AC (Craven is being renovated). Personally, I love living on West...it's just so convenient.

Shrinkrap - around February/March or so. Rush begins in January.

Is Craven being renovated for 09-10? I haven't heard anything about this. Does that mean all the juniors who are abroad Fall 09 will be offered housing in Craven for Spring 2010 the way all the abroad students get Few for Spring 2009 this year?

Why would frats get guaranteed housing but not sororities?

Because sororities haven't requested to have housing...although there is some discussion that it might change in the future. And now real estate is tighter than it has been in the past as well. Some in sororities want housing and some don't. Everybody in a frat wants a section really.
