I'm curious if I will be able to handle four AP classes as well as four regular classes as a junior. I plan on taking AP Spanish 4, AP US History, AP Language and Composition, and Honors Physics (not technically AP, but college level). Our school has a block schedule so in addition I will take Journalism, Pre-Calculus, ASB Officer, and Mock Trial 2. Do these APs along with these regular courses sound manageable for me, an A or -A student who took honors classes soph and fresh years?

Depends on the teachers. Depends on your work ethic. Depends on what else you'll be trying to do that year--like, things that take major chunks of after-school hours (athletics, theater, job, whatever). I handled 4 APs plus other hard academic courses and a demanding theater role just fine during my senior year, and I wasn't necessarily any more mature or capable of high-level coursework that year than I was the year before.

I took 6 and got straight A's while going out like every other night so yeah.

I agree with Anniushka.

You are your best judge as to your abilities. The three APs will be challenging. You will likely have to read a lot during the year. But, if you want to take them, then by all means do!

i took 3 aps last year (biology, us history, english comp) as a junior.. i never miss school, but i was extremely exhausted and sometimes took days off to rest (which wasn't much help either because i missed work) i had 1 ap as a sophmore and thought it was pretty easy to handle. but yeah 3 was a pretty big load

was taking that many aps hard? yes
did i hate doing it? yes
was it a mistake to pressure myself that much? maybe
was it worth it in the end? yes yes yes

see my idea is that you should take more challenging classes your junior year, because by the time you are a senior, you won't have time for all those aps along with writing essays and completing applications and you get lazy.
so good luck to you! just manage your time and don't go party too much on the weekends. oh and be sure to get tons of sleep :)

Well, I guess it depends on the school then.

Because APs are a joke here.

out of my five classes junior year, i was in 2 AP classes and one honors classes.the honors class was a joke but the two AP's were a b!tch. i could handle it though because i had so much free time during the day.

ugh aps at my school suck.. the ap teachers give you so much work! they think that their own class trumps all other classes in school. but my school's test scores are pretty high so i guess thats the reward..?

It depends on your school. Find out from students and teachers the workload involved in each class. At our school, four AP classes would give you at bare minimum 6.5hrs a night to fulfill the teacher's wants from you (if you read entire assignments and put your best effort into any written work) and oftentimes more, plus a couple hours for the other classes, again at minimum- it would literally be impossible at my school to take 4 AP classes. Then you have a school like my sister's, where 4 AP courses wouldn't add up to 6.5 any week.

The above posters are right...It depends on your school, really. My advice would be to ask students who have taken four APs as juniors to get their opinion. If this is not possible, your counselor may have an idea of how well kids typically handle that kind of workload. I took three APs as a junior and that was unheard of at my school. I hat to put my foot down and basically TELL my academic dean that I was doing whether she cared for the idea or not. Needless to say, it turned out very well and I enjoyed the experience. However, I have a remarkable work ethic and only you should be able to tell whether or not yours is strong enough to handle a heavy workload.

like eveyone else has said...it depends.

taking them for the weighted grade is different then taking them to get credit for the exams. you have to know this before you can answer your question.

i handled my 4 just fine, got straight a's, had a life, and i am almost positive i got 4's or 5's on all 4. (euro, bc calc, psych, and bio)

what is your motivation for taking the classes??

I handled 5 and got better grades than any past year. Something about having more/harder classes made me work even more/harder than I needed to. Dunno if it works that way with you.

Only you truly know the answer to that question. ;)

Thanks for your help so far.

AP US History at our school is THE hardest course. All my junior friends say it involves lots of reading, studying, and homework.

AP Lang. and Comp. I've been told is relatively easy. But I know there's lots of essay writing.

AP Spanish 4 I've heard is really tough, mostly because the amount of studying needed to achieve the language skills.

Honors Physics, I'm not sure the teacher is well known as being quite hard.

It response to coloradogirl I want to take these classes b/c I enjoy an academic challenge and want to get into a really good college (Amherst, Bowdoin, Pomona, Williams). I want to take these classes so I get a feel for what college level courses might be like (even though I'm sure these won't be as demanding as actual courses at say, Pomona) The "smart" people at our school are just kind of expected to take APs, which is fine with me.

if you like the challenge, i think you'll be fine. good luck!!

I took 5 while also having a job after school and still got strigth A's, so you can do it.
As someone said earlier, it really depends on the teachers. If you have 4impossible teachers who load you up with work, you might want to reconsider.

my euro class was a *****, as well as the teacher who was pregnant and barely did any afterschool bonus movies, which helped everybody's grades. nobody,e xcept one history obsessed girl whose parents love EuroHistory, got an A. And our class was pretty competitive.
english langugae is easy if you love writing, which i do.
i hated physics, unforutnately have to take it in college anywyas x_x

but yes besides the point.
kindof just depends on your school and the rigor of its AP program.
but im sure you can do it, it just requires effort

Like everyone else said, it depends on your school's program. Do most people at your school take 4 APs? Then you should probably be fine. I was in the IB program at my school and took 6 IB/AP classes plus was Editor-in-Chief of my school newspaper both my junior and senior years. I've survived and even had time to watch a hour or so of TV each night plus my other ECs and a job. It really all comes down to your work ethic. The way I see it though is that those intense junior/senior year course loads will be great prep for college because I'll be used to the college-level course load.

I was able to take four APs with Marching Band.

This is based on my school, and could quite possibly be different from yours. I had AP Calc AB, and it was basically a normal math class at the normal pace. AP US History is big at our school, but it felt like a normal class to me. AP Language was a total *****; I spent most of my time on it. AP Physics C was tough as well.

As bad1017 said above, it all depends on your classmates. If most students take 2-5 APs junior year, and you consider yourself a top student (not necessarily the greatest), you should be fine.
