Can I Handle AP Physics C Mechanics and E/M?

I am a junior and am taking AP Chemistry and A level Physics. AP Chem was initially tough, I got an 80 1st Quarter but I understand it now and have a 91 2nd quarter. Our chem teacher makes his tests harder than the ap exam and no tests are curved. Physics A is a complete joke and I get A’s on tests with absolutely no studying. I am looking to take an AP science next year. I prefer the “problem solving” type of class to the “memorize” class, so physics is the closest thing to chem.

My AP Chem teacher said that if I survived his class I have the ability to get through any other AP science at our school. He recommended me for AP Physics C Mechanics and E/M. I will be taking AP Calc AB next year. I am not the smartest guy but I work hard. Besides taking APC sounds cool and makes me feel like a mad scientist hehe. I understand I may have to study some basic calc before the course, but im worried I won’t be able to wrap my head around the more “mathy” physics class. Do you think I can get through first semester mechanics in APC with a decent grade? I cannot drop the course cause then i would have to notify colleges. (Also I have heard E/M is much more difficult but im not too worried given i will be a second semester senior lol)

(I have a senior friend who is taking APC concurrently with AP Calc BC. He also took AP Chem/Physics A junior year. He is doing well and recommends it, but he’s a better math student.)

Though I am interested in science, I have no idea what major I will be pursuing, I also plan to take AP Lit, AP Gov (or Euro), and AP Chinese

Hey, I’m a current sophomore taking AP Chem and AP Physics C (both Mech and E&M). I’m not sure if my opinion would be helpful or not, but I just wanted to say that I am currently finding AP Physics (at least the Mechanics portion) to be relatively comparable in difficulty to AP Chem. I know that most students in both of these classes have grades in the low Bs/high Cs so I don’t know if that’s something you want to consider, but it’s definitely possible to get an A if you put in 1-2 hours a night. The only advice I would have is that math (especially Calc) is crucial to AP Physics. I took AP Calc BC last year (and got a 5) and still struggled with some of the math topics, especially the E&M concepts. I would definitely advise against taking the E&M course/test if you don’t have an extremely solid calculus background but I think that the Mechanics portion would be manageable, given that you are very motivated to do well.

(As a side note, if you have the choice, pick AP Gov over AP Euro, especially if you decide to go for the AP Physics C course. I’m currently taking Euro and the workload can often be absolutely overwhelming.)

I apologize if you feel intimidated by @Jess80808 who took AP Calculus BC his freshman year and AP Physics Mech AND E&M his Sophomore year.

Don’t worry. I’m in similar shoes as you are. I am a Junior taking AP Calculus AB and AP Physics 1 with the intention of taking AP Calculus BC and AP Physics (both Mech and E&M) in my Senior year. I highly recommend them since almost all colleges accept them. (Even MIT accepts ACTUAL credit for AP Calculus BC and both AP Physics C exams) Math / Science colleges will love you! They look good on your transcript, and you will certainly be prepared for whatever introductory Physics and Mathematics course you take. They will be very useful!

Eeep! @ObitoSigma Sorry if I was a bit, ahem, “forward” with my credentials. (I’m actually a female, :P) I promise I’m really a rather ordinary kid that is very lucky to benefit from some extraordinary opportunities.

That being said, to the OP, as ObitoSigma said, do take AP Physics C if you find the material interesting and relevant to your intended major/career path, etc.

Depends on the class. My AP Physics C class is relatively hard, so only a few kids got an A. The material is pretty difficult because you have to combine science and calculus. And it also depends on the other classes you are taking. If you have a full load of AP classes PLUS AP Physics C, it’s going to be a tough year. Assuming you do sports, EC’s, and other normal human activities :).
