Can I have a Stafford Loan, meant to cover two semesters, pay for only one semester?

“if you plan to live at home the estimated COA for CUNY full-time for nine months includes tuition and fees plus approximately $9,600 for all other costs”

@kelsmom will correct me if I’m wrong.

I believe that if you are attending college for spring term ONLY you are only entitled to 1 semester of Pell, and one semester of Direct Loan money…so half of what younwouldmhave gotten for the full year.

$2900 for Pell for one semester.

$2750 Dirct Loan for one semester.

You cannot receive financial aid for terms of college when you are NOT enrolled as a student.

@sybbie719 can clarify what you would be eligible for for a semester only of TAP.

Right. That “$9,600 for all other costs” is estimated living expenses. Schools may publish separate COAs for resident students (i.e. living in a dorm on campus), students living off campus, and commuters. But no school will increase your COA if you tell them that you need to buy a $2000 PC.

My plan was to come here and get help approximating what kind of terms i would be dealing with. And If the financial aid i receive meets my requirements for this PC project I would buy the PC once I start school.

If my Pell and Tap are going to be cut in half, it looks like Tap will be about 1,500 which means my Spring semester will not be covered by just grants and I am going to have to save to build this computer

TAP, NYS aid and PELL (federal aid) are entitlements. If you are eligible for them, you will receive them.

City Tech has both 2 year and 4 year programs. Unless you specifically applied for a two year program that is not competitive, I would not assume that you have already been accepted. There are programs; hospitality management, Culinary Arts, Fashion, Computer Science, School of Technology that fill up fast leaving very few seats for spring admits

No, that is not how it works. You do not get aid if you are not in school.

If you are in school for only one semester

your tuition is $3165 for the semester

http://www.citytech.cuny.edu/admissions/tuition-general.aspx

you will only get half of the TAP award, which is ~ $1500

What is your EFC? You are not getting full TAP (which is ~ $5165 for a 0 EFC)

You will get ~ 5000 in Pell for the year if your EFC is ~ $700

http://www.ega.edu/images/uploads/2016-2017PellPaymentSchedule_Portrait.pdf

Since you will only be in school for the spring semester, you will only get half of the Pell (provided you are enrolled full time). If you are entitled to $5000 in Pell, you will only receive $2500.

Based on what you wrote, you will receive approx $4k in federal and state aid. After the deduction of tuition, you will be left with $835 (less after they deduct fees).

No matter how much your cost increase, you will not get increased TAP or PELL.

Or does that mean my tuition cost would be cut in half as well? The pamphlet says it cost CUNY City tech $6,720 per YEAR. does that mean 2 semesters?

This isn’t necessarily true. Schools can adjust individual budgets on a case-by-case basis. That doesn’t necessarily entitle you to additional aid nor is it a guarantee that your budget will be increased but it can.

It sounds as if you are counting on a full year’s worth of aid, while you are only planning to attend for one semester. Aid doesn’t work like that. You’ll need to cut the amount you anticipate receiving by half and base your calculations on that.

Correct.

Right now i feel like i can forget about receiving financial aid for this computer and will have to just save my money as I planned originally. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might be able to fund my PC with federal student aid?
Right now im thinking of borrowing just 500 . And just paying for the rest of the PC myself

My EFC is 0

ok ok ok im adding stuff up thanks guys

If you are verified for having a 0 EFC

Full TAP for a 0 EFC is $5165 half is $2,582
Full Pell is $5815 half is $2907.5

$5489.5 -3165 = 2324.50

How many years have you attended college in the past? It will affect your over all Pell eligibility (as there is a limited amount of time you can get PELL).

Did you previously attend school in NYS? That will affect your TAP as you are only eligible for 4 years (whether or not you complete a degree)

you will get the balance after any and all mandatory fees (to the school and your program are deducted)

You can check your SAR for your EFC . You can also check HESC if you filed for TAP to get an idea as to how much TAP you are eligible for.

No.

Why do you have to build this computer…now?

I am on a fixed income. I collect SSI disability and am out of school. So it is easy for me to save money. Once I am in school, I will be outside every day nearly, and i will likely spend more money. I am taking advantage of my sedentary life right now to save to get all the parts for christmas so i wont have to micro budget and buy the computer in 2018. I really dont want to have to save for that long just to buy a computer so i am trying to buy it near the beginning of the spring semester.

I also want to reward myself after going through literally hell, being diagnosed with schizophernia my first year of college, having to stop going to school for 4 years and what not. I deserve it.

Well, by all means then, do whatever you can to get the taxpayers to fork over for your $2,000 PC.

Your sarcasm is lame. And your insinuating that i have entitlement issues is equally lame. I could tell you why youre wrong but you clearly think being “smart” makes you look cute and that you’ll get something out of me. All I know is i don’t plan to be on disability forever and i might as well take your hard earned money while i can because judgmental people like you are what lead to my mental neuroses to begin with. So in the end I will have the last laugh. A beautifully rendered 4k 3D laugh made in Maya or Cinema 4D, Probably on a Disney character’s face that you will observe with your 3 kids, sitting on a fat beer stomach full of junk and popcorn, possibly long enough for you to stay after the credits and find my name.
