Thanks

Schedule looks fine. If you had to drop a class I would drop X100 (doesn’t really count for anything).

I had Tracy Whelan for S118 (honors finite) and she was fine. She lays the material out quickly and covers everything in the test. I didn’t like the way she curved the first test (the lower score you got the more of a curve you got, so a 100% on the test go no added points). But she curved the third one nicely (if you did better on the final, she would replace the third test with the score on the final).

Aren’t you a direct admit? You had a 35 ACT? Direct admits should not be taking X100. Worthless class for them.

I wasn’t a direct admit. My GPA was too low and I didn’t petition as I had less interest in Kelley at the time. Is X100 still a waste of time? There are other more interesting classes I’d rather take than X100.

is it bad that I have to take x-104 and k-201 in the same semester? Both classes are full and can’t get in. Are they any alternatives or do i have to take them in the same semester?

Loonlake, technically you don’t have to take X100 even as a non-direct admit, so long as you take W131, M118, M119, and K201, and at least 26 credits your first year at IU. X100 grades easily, so you might want to take it anyway. The downside is that you could be taking something else, like a class that applies to the distribution option, instead.

[Future IU Freshmen: Admissions: Undergraduate Program: Kelley School of Business: Indiana University Bloomington](<a href=“Undergraduate: Programs: Kelley School of Business: Indiana University”>Undergraduate: Programs: Kelley School of Business: Indiana University)
Standard Admission (2010–2011)

If you’re a current student at IU and didn’t qualify for direct admission, or if you’ve just now decided you want to earn a business degree, you can apply to Kelley once you have met the requirements below. These requirements are for 2010–2011 only.

* Completion of 26–70 hours of college coursework. (For transfer students, this includes completion of at least one semester on the Bloomington campus.)

  • Consistent “B” performance across all courses. Please note that a B– does not meet this requirement. The Admissions Committee reviews grades in all courses, not just business courses.
  • Completion of ENG-W 131 Elementary Composition (or equivalent).
  • Completion of three or more of the following admissions courses:
    o MATH-M 118 Finite Mathematics
    o MATH-M 119 Brief Survey of Calculus
    o BUS-K 201 The Computer in Business
o BUS-X 100 Introduction to Business Administration OR BUS-G 100 Business in the Information Age
  • Demonstrate commitment to course load. Students with no W’s in coursework have stronger application

indycar, there are over 100 K201 seats open right now for these times for the main lecture, all with Amy Kinser:

Th 5:45PM - 6:35PM 30 seats

Th 6:50PM - 7:40PM 63 seats

Fr 9:05AM - 9:55AM 33 seats

Then you select a lab session.

These haven’t been added to the text file schedule yet, as it has not been updated since yesterday. You can find a real time IUB schedule without logging into OneStart by following this link and clicking on “Schedule of Classes” in the section “Real Time OneStart Class Search” located near the top of the page.
http://registrar.iupui.edu/schedule.html</a></p>

There are no seats for X104 right now according to the real time schedule. More may open up later. If they do, they will probably be very early or very late in the day. Probably a good idea to take either K201 or X104 this semester. Probably K201 since there are openings now.

re: BUS-X100, my son says the prof listed (David Rubenstine) is a student favorite. An easy A is hard to turn down for a non-DA.

However, he does question taking both finite and calculus in the same semester. Depending on the teacher, the homework workload could be intense. Since you need to get at least a B in both, you may want to reconsider. Is there a reason you want to take them together in the same semester?

indycarkid, most people advise against doing K201 and X104 in the same semester because of the amount of group work they both entail. Coordinating meeting times with 3 or 4 others for one class is hard enough. Did you get on a waitlist for this semester for these classes? Maybe some spots will open up.

*crossposted with Bthomp. Follow her advice!

What IS X-100 anyways? The advisor told me to take it because it’s through Kelley and showing that I could get a good grade in that class would enhance my app to Kelley. But I lost my course catalog and I still have no idea what the class is as “Intro to Business Administration” is really vague.

However… she also said that if I get rejected from Kelley and decide to pursue a major in another IUB college that the colleges only allow “x” number of outside credits… so would that be a good reason to get out of X100 and take something else?

…and @ IllinoisMom: I’m actually rather weary about taking Finite and M119 at the same time, however a lot of friends I met at orientation were doing the same thing and the advisor said that it’d be completely manageable considering I got 100% on the math placement test.

I think the point about other schools accepting Kelley credit is kind of irrelevant, because the COAS takes 22 credits from outside schools in the 122 credit total to get a BA or BS. You will be taking seven this semester from outside COAS and no way you would take more than 15 next semester outside of COAS. So Kelley will decide to admit you or not long before you hit 22 Kelley credits. Only Kelley credits over 22 cannot be applied to COAS.

As far as X100 looking good if you get an A in it, it is pretty clear from the Kelley admissions website that all “B” coursework will get you in with or without X100.

X100 doesn’t cover anything you won’t learn later at Kelley:
“X100 Introduction to Business (3 cr.) Business administration from the standpoint of the manager of a business firm operating in the contemporary economic, political, and social environment. No credit for juniors or seniors in the Kelley School.”

Taking calculus and finite the same semester will give you a lot of math homework. If you were perfect on the placement test then you probably will have no problem taking both except for being bored by all the homework, which might get annoying as the semester goes on. The homework is important to do gradewise.

K201 did not have any group work when I took it (two years ago). K204 (honors version) had the group work.

I just went on OneStart and dropped X-100. It’s utterly pointless.

Since I got a 4 on the AP Microeconomics exam and am exempted from ECON-E/S201, can I add G202 in replacement of X100 since it’s an I-Core prereq? Or is K201 better?

I would just take G202. All that math homework and K201 would be a busy semester, especially with X104 group work. G202 will look good on your app, as not that many freshmen take it. One of the sections with openings is only for direct admits.

You want to get a 3.7+ gpa Fall semester so that you can get into Hutton Honors College and take honors classes your sophomore year, such as the two accounting honors classes. Of course, you might be wanting to get into Kelley business honors, which would allow you to take business honors classes next year. But being in Hutton would also allow you to take take easy grading honors classes in Hutton to fulfill distribution option requirements the rest of your time at IU.

I just added G202. It doessn’t sound interesting either but atleast it’s an I-Core prereq =/

My schedule looks like this so far:
A100, M-119, W-131, CSCI-A110, X-100, and x-255. I’m a standard admit trying to get into Kelley. I just realized that spots opened up in K-201. Should i drop csci-110 and take k201 instead? Would it be too heavy?

^ X100 isn’t an ICore prereq. I’d put W131 on hold till Spring, drop X100, and add K201 OR Econ 201 so that you could take G202 in the Spring which would look good to Kelley in the case that you get lower than a B in something.

I’m not allowed to take BUS-G 202 because it requires a prerequisite of econ-201. I want to take bus-x100 because when I am accepted to Kelley, it will count as an SH course. What i want to know is if it would be too much work to add 201 and drop A110?

“I want to take bus-x100 because when I am accepted to Kelley, it will count as an SH course.”

Indycar, that is not true. BUS X100 will not count for S&H. Zero Kelley classes count for S&H.
Here is a list of the qualifying A&H, S&H, and N&M classes. They are all taught by departments in the College of Arts & Sciences. None are from Kelley.
[College of Arts and Sciences 2008-2010 Online Bulletin: Appendix II: Approved Distribution Courses](http://www.indiana.edu/~bulletin/iub/college/2008-2010/appendix2.shtml)

But you should still take X100 for other reasons as you need three of the following to get into Kelley: M118, M119, K201, and X100. And unless you are really strong in math, I would not take both calculus and finite before applying for Kelley, as each one has a fairly high risk of getting less than a solid B [check the grade distributions; way less than half the people who take M118 and M119 get a B or higher; http://www.iub.edu/~registra/gradedist/</a>. If you are not very strong in math, use X100, M119, and K201 to get into Kelley. Also, take W131, because you need that too to apply to Kelley.

I would just leave your schedule as it is. K201 will not be as difficult for you next semester if you have taken A110 this semester. And there will be no group work (just don’t take K204, which has lots of group work). So K201 and X104 the same semester will not be that bad after taking A110 this semester. A110 will also give you N&M credit without a science lab and is easy grading (half the people who don’t drop it get A- or higher). Remember that you have to take A110 before you take K201 to get N&M credit for it.

Bthomp,
I find you more useful than my advisers. you should consider working for IU. Thanks for the advice.

Indycarkid, bthomp ia right that X100 is not an S&H. As far as I know those classes are only in COAS. What I meant is that you should drop X100 and replace it with Econ 201, further enabling you to take G202 in the Spring. Besides being an I-Core Prereq, G202 is a lot more impressive when applying to Kelley than X100.
