can i have some of your honest thoughts?

white male
junior
gpa-3.99 weighted (i know, i know, .01 away from that d**n 4...)
3.7 unweighted(something high...like 3.78 or 3.79...ill figure out after
spring break)

SAT-(v630 m640 w660) total 1930

im 38/six-hundred-something in my class i believe

straight a's cept for my straight b's in AP eng. 11

im good at making things...like ive made district chorus 3 years in a row, made state chorus this year, always make the top choirs at my school, recently accepted as 1 of 48 kids from the US to be accepted into a 10-day cultural exchange program over the summer at princeton

so i have my voice and my knowledge of japan going for me...I want to major in something such as Japanese studies and foreign affairs...sigh. i live in VA. so i guess i also have in state going for me...im very good at writing essays and I am able to speak my mind professionally and maturely...i know ive spelled something wrong here.

in your honest opinion, do i have a chance of being accepted at UVA?

thank you for your time and thoughts!

oh man...thought id have a reply by now...anyone! please!

Good chance. Your GPA (3.7) and rank (top 6%) are fairly solid, as is your SAT score. Applying early would improve your chances, but you'd have a good shot RD. You're clearly not an auto-admit, but your application will garner serious consideration. Write good essays and get good recommendations, and you'll be as competitive as most instaters.

cool! thanks for the input. anyone else have any comments or suggestions? thanks everyone.

well you got good ecs..unweighted GPA is borderline but then against I've seen 3.6 UW accepted and 3.9UW rejected so who knows..nice balanced SAT score that's important.. My stats were much like yours but my GPA UW was a little higher and I took my SATs again to boost my score try takin your SATs again just to assure yourself a spot in the class of 2011

thanks for the input. do you honestly think i should take the sat again?

I agree with the other posters. Your chances are good.

What's missing? What have you done for non-ijusell carbon units. That is, what have you done for community or society. What have you done that you didn't HAVE to do. UVa (like all of us) believes that we learn a lot by building community, by being part of something bigger than ourselves--hopefully through hard work and sacrifice. I know it's hard to do this, but try to avoid things that look like you're just padding your college application.

I think u have a good shot since ur instate. I have a 3.8UW GPA and a 1450 on the SATs and was waitlisted.

if you are seriously after UVa or Wm and Mary, you should most definitely try to improve your SATs although in state students with your stats are admitted and UVa reads essays with care. my S's (instate) top scores were in October his senior year. It is a huge pain to keep putting energy in the exams but worth it. some kids never need to prepare and do super without the effort, but I recommend getting up one morning and laying out an energy bar for the fifteen minute break and doing the whole thing with a timer in exactly the time frame of the real sitting. Clear your head and later study your errors. Also you can opt to pay to get your exam answers back in some sittings which allows you to review your lost points.
Strong SATII scores add to your presentation. Again they are short and easy to prepare for if you really take the practice exams. Some kids regretted walking in on them cold.
My son showed some foresight and missed a couple beautiful spring weekends in his junior year by taking afternoons to study SATII books and practice exams. He took SATIIs on the last May date and the June date junior year. I recommend that route because it is easier to work on the 60 minute exams right now. Use your summer to build up your SAT I exam prowess when you have a freer life.
You have leadership in choral activities. Get online and take a look at UVa's choral programs and get informed. Let them see that you would be a core person in this aspect of campus life. Your Japanese experience will stand out.
If you love UVa, I truly hope you get in. You have a great high school record and that should help your references shine. Stay open no matter what however and find at least two other schools you would also be happy with.

two of my friends with similar stats to yours were rejected this year (both with about 3.9 wGPA and 1900-2000 SAT)

one was white, one asian, and we're instate

rank was a little lower, though (about 75/576)

neither had a large amount of ECs or awards/honors

I got in with a 4.35 wgpa (3.84 UW), 1800 sats, lots of EC's, and a fair amt of awards. (rank 28/576)

You'll probably be alright, but it isn't a sure thing. Keep the grades up and take as many AP's as you are comfortable with.

Good Luck!

jackson, your experience clearly shows the importance of class rank and UW GPA in the admissions process. Your friends did not have competitive class ranks and did not have competitive GPA's, either.

exactly; however, one did get into w&m

raise ur sat score a little to boost ur chances but u look fine
reading+math to about 1400+?
