Although I'm only a sophmore in HS, i really wanna go to MIT
So, my question is, can I volunteer at MIT during the summer? I mean, help anyone with research or sms like this?

Thanks in advance!

P.S. I'm only one year in the US, and my English is still very weak. So, if you find any mistakes, please, forgive me :D

apply for RSI next year. maybe you'll get to do research at MIT summer after your junior year. http://www.cee.org/rsi/index.shtml

No prestige at all, but it's an enjoyable experience.

Hm....everything you've posted is ok, but i'm asking about unofficial volunteer work. Maybe some of your teachers needs (or wants) help.
I just need to become acquainted with somebody from There (from MIT, i mean)...

things that need doing by volunteers around MIT tend to get filled by people from MIT; we're the pool of people they turn to first, b/c they have a decent idea of our most basic specs, we're in the area, it's simple to contact/advertise to us, and it's easy to get hold of people who know us for recs. i can't really think of any opportunities that sound like what you're looking for.

if getting into MIT is your motivation for volunteering, then I would advise you to reevaluate your incentives because it isn't good enough.

I understand what you mean, but, as I said above, my knoledge of English language is....BAD :) , and sometimes what I write (or say) does not realy mean it.
I'm sorry for that. The thing is,
I do not want to volunteer only beacause I want to get in MIT
I volunteer beacause I want to volunteer
but thank you anyway that you've said that the post sounds as if i'm a selfish person :) next time I'll try to write more carefully. :)

Why volunteer at MIT? I seriously doubt that they need you more than your local community does. I too am a sophomore, and use to think that getting to know people MIT will help me get in, but the thing is, once you realize that MIT isn't everything, but merely something that will help you do what you need to do, your attitude towards everything will change.

Whether I get into MIT or not will not determine when and if I will do something, because MIT is not teaching Magic, they are teaching from books, and I can buy the books, and study independantly. It is all a power of will man...

Anyway, I know this is kind of OT, but since I just finished AP Calc BC, and I am pretty sure I did very well, is it possible to get ahold of the books MIT uses for 18.02, and possible 18.01 ? what about cheap? Do students sell their books online?

of course it's possible; look on the class website to see which titles they use and recommend, then check ebay and half.com, for old texts in general. i'm not sure whether people here more often just give their books to underclassmen (free or for cheap) or would rather make a little more money online (still cheaper than new) i actually have an 18.02 book, but don't recall using it much, since lecture was useful.

Ok. Aparantly(sp?) it is possible to buy the newest versions of the books used for 18.02 and 18.01 on Amazon for under $20. Is this realistic, or am I being ripped off?

if they're used, it's possible, but sounds just a bit too cheap. some people just really don't put any value on used texts, tho. me, i usually run them about 1/3 to 1/2 of what they cost me when reselling mine, esp since that's to friends/acquaintances. if i were selling to strangers, i'd likely run higher, but then, it's mostly what the market will bear.

thought: a recent conversation involved a friend who acquires books cheaply and resells them for more online (cheap=free, possibly, from reuse). in which case it's almost pure profit, and so any price is good.

so, you say they don't need me (or anybody else form high school)
and the only thing left is to take a lot of AP's, be senior president, won first or second place in the international math competition or to build a time machine?
Or (as they like to say) just be yourself. That's what everybody says...
but you've brought a good point. About the books, I mean.
However, going to MIT is more prestigious than just learning from their books (at least i think so).
Aaaaand, trying to study from the books without any teacher does not always help... yeah.....
oh well :)

so, how many AP's are you planning to take?
and, asking MIT students, if, let's say, my AP limit is 4 more classes, which of them should I take: those with science and math (Calc, Physics, Stat, Comp Science) or those of social studies (American H., US Government, Psychology and so on)?
I understand it's a banal question, and you probably are getting sick of it, but....just one more time :)

take the ones you like. preferably a mix of both.

well, I took AP Stat last year as a freshmen, and this year as a sophomore, I am taking Calculus BC(self-study), Physics B, and CompSci AB.

I am not telling you to do what you said.

"going to MIT is more prestigious than just learning from their books"

No... just because you go there does not mean you automatically know everything. You still have to read the book, do the problems, etc. The only advantages is the professors and other students.

Trying to study from books is completely possible. Just look at Ramanujan.

Google is my friend!

i've never used the "I'm feeling Lucky" button before. that was fun.

Go to gamedev.net and search for him. They have a link to his journals. The mans a genius. He used S.L. Loney, of which I have a copy, at age 12, and basically figured out everything from there. Man is a genius.

PS Indian math books rock cuz they are so small and they are so concise!
yay for 30 year old textbooks that are faded and falling apart(dads)!

Something is reaaaaally wrong with me-can't find him-what am I doing wrong? :)
saaaay, you also like mm...."not american" books?
(this is NOT an anti-American post lol )
