I don't think my gpa shows my potential. If it did, I'd careless what it is, but I don't want to settle for less. I'm a sophmore, and I hope by the time I'm a senior applying to college, it will be much better and more competitive.
Freshman year, I ended up with a 3.5. For my first quarter, I have a 3.6. Is there anyway I can raise my gpa closer to a 3.9 or 4.0? Any words of wisdom. I don't want to dig myself a hole so deep that by the time senior year comes by I'll be in a state of regret.

Get all A's. If your school released your weighted GPA then take more challenging courses.

GPA-wise, it's better to get an A in a regular course than a B in an honors course. However, adcoms love when students challenge themselves. It's your decision.

So if I got a B in an honors course, it SUCKS?! Damn...

I always hate that - adcoms want you to take the honors class and get that B rather than an A in the regular class, but all that does is lower or keep your GPA at the same place. Bah!!

Pretty much all you can do is get all A's and take AP's (especially if they're weighted). Make sure not to slack off during exam time and get all A's on those.

Well you should look at your school's GPA charts first because at my school,a B in an honors course=4.0 and an A in a regular also=4.0, so you can take the honors without worries.

Well, to give a clue of my school's grading:

an A in honors course = 4.5
an A- in honors course= 4.15
an A- in a regular's course is around a 3.8
a B+ in a regular's course is around a 3.6.
a B+ in a honors course is calculated as around 3.8

Everyone is right. If I earn a 4.0 the rest of the year, I may end up with a 3.9. But, realistically, I'll be glad for a 3.8.

Just don't be too discouraged if your GPA doesn't seem to rise much by midterm or the end of this year. My school's grading chart:

A = 4.0
B = 3.0
C = 2.0
D = 1.0
AP = .025 add on (only if you take the exam)

We also use an 8pt. grading scale (ie: 92-100 = A, 83-91 = B, etc.)

So, at my school, GPA goes up incredibly slowly, but drops easily. I always get discouraged at midterm because my GPA only rises maybe .01-.03 - a lot of times it drops at midterm though. I still haven't figured that one out.

My old HS:

AP.....H......CP

A+ 5.45..4.95..4.3
A 5.15..4.6...4
A- 4.65....4.25..3.7
B+ 4.3......3.9...3.4

I forget the rest.

Well anyway, of course you can raise your GPA. Why not?

my school doesn't weigh AP's or honors

i have a q - is gpa based on the final grades, or are all 3 terms (that's what our school goes by) taken into account?
