Can I just kind of get general chances?

I'm a junior in high school. Here in the next year I'm going to really be working on getting into the college I want. I'm fairly set on somewhere in the Graphic Design field, but I could use some answers for colleges.

Here is some of my prerequisites:
- I'm in all AP classes. Currently taking Calculus, as well as TAG(honors) English.
- I haven't gotten any scores for ACT or SAT yet, but my PSAT score was 200. Collegeboard projected me to get somewhere between 1950-2050 on my SAT.
- I won first place in the state of Texas for for desktop publishing.
- I will most likely be interning at a graphic design firm this summer.
- GPA is around 3.1, but with AP classes, my bumped up GPA is 4.1.
- My portfolio is reasonably developed. I have made websites as well as some posters, business cards, and logos. All of it is reasonably professional as far as design concepts go, but obviously it's not my place to say if it's anything great.
- I lead my church's youth worship team. guitar/sing.
- I have been on mission trips to both Mexico and Haiti, and participate regularly in community services.
- I'm the Graphics Editor of my school Yearbook.

Anyways, here's where I'm at. I honestly don't know where my best opportunities for education are. Honestly, I'm most likely stuck in the state of Texas without a scholarship, money-wise. What colleges have the best opportunity for design in Texas? Do you think it's a reasonable hope for me to get accepted to a good out of state college? If so, how decent of a college do you think I could get at least a partial scholarship for? I would absolutely LOVE to go somewhere like Pratt or Chicago, but I'm trying not to get my hopes up. I appreciate any help you can offer me :).

you certainly do have a chance at good schools. don’t get me wrong, you’re not going to harvard or anything, but you have a chance at some top 50 kinds of schools. i had similar stats to you (2090 SAT + 3.2 UW GPA + 9 APs) and a strong portfolio, and i got into Boston University and Syracuse. Syracuse could be a good match for you, too. if you have financial need, syracuse is amazing with need-based aid. although universities like this are very interested in your academic performance, the schools which have art schools within them will use your portfolio as a major part of the application process. as far as scholarships go, it’s really tough to get any sizable art scholarship anywhere. i was offered a $2,000 art scholarship at BU…which is actually the largest art-based scholarship i was offered anywhere. however, if you have good enough art, schools tend to be more “encouraging” to you with need-based aid.

honestly, i don’t know about schools in Texas which have excellent design programs, but you could certainly go out of state. pure art schools like pratt, parsons, SMFA, SAIC (i assume this is what you meant by chicago, not Uchicago?), or FIT look almost entirely at your portfolio for application. your academics will be easily strong enough for any of those schools. they’re really expensive, though. go get your portfolio checked out at the next national portfolio day; you’ll get a feel for whether you’re getting any kind of big scholarships from art schools.

another school to check out is Virginia Commonwealth. it has the top public art school in the country and it’s comparatively cheap for out of state students.

also, first place in texas for desktop publishing? hello, fellow TSA member…i see you’re whipping those tech nerds at design. it really is too easy, isn’t it? haha you’re talking to the colorado promotional graphics 1st place winner 2 years straight. :stuck_out_tongue:
enter your work into the scholastic art and writing awards next year; some schools offer sizable scholarships to gold key winners.

Here’s a list of schools just for reference I suppose.

University of Texas
University of North Texas (I hear they have a decent design dept)
Pratt
Chicago
UBC
Then like an out-of-state school liek Cal…

Oh, hey a post. Lol. Thanks for that, it’s somewhat encouraging. My club is actually Skills USA :P. It was pretty freakishly easy. The scoring was out of 1000 and there were like 30 people in state (2 from each region, most regions have around 10 participants or so), but I won by like 200 or 300 points or something ridiculous lol. This was my first year, but I’ll be in again next year.

Thanks specifically for the advice on entering into the awards next year and the school info. It’s awesome to hear from someone who has been in a similar position as me.

And yeah, that’s what I meant by chicago xD

Congratulations on Boston and Syracuse. Which did you choose?

Bump it up. I would love to get some more advice. This place helps a lot.
