can i live the dream?

can i live my dream of going to harvard?

(by the way, im not y0itzr0, but his buddy. i didnt feel like making my own account)

Martial Arts 3rd degree black belt.
-I created a Martial Arts Team for my school and other schools in the area.
-We go to elementary schools in the area and teach them about safety (how to get out when a stranger grabs arm, puts gun to forehead, etc.)
-I've been doing martial arts for 12 years
-I went to India and held martial arts camps, teaching them how to be safe (")

Indian Classical Singer
-3rd in Nationals
-Held multiple shows in India where I performed solo, raised over $15,000 for education for poor children
-Got recommendation from Minister of Arts and Culture (he complemented singing, said how I was one of the best male, teen singers he has heard), (I was in Indian newspapers, lots of good reviews)
- I sang for an Indian movie soundtrack. I went to the studio, recorded the song, and it was put in an Indian film, and was also sold in a CD for the movie songs
-I have done 50+ local performances, and have a recommendation letter from the man who holds the record for holding the world's largest cultural event (He knows me quite well, complements my singing ability and passion for singing)

DECA
- President of my school's chapter
- Came 2nd Place in state, 3rd nationwide

Stock Market Club
- President of school's stock market club
-In the process of building a team to take to nationals
-Have an actual part time stock broker for our advisor

Comp Civics (We the People)

Honors Society

Mentorship
- A couple of well-known executives mentored me, teaching me the rules and world of business, and got some good recommendations from them.

Volunteering
-As I mentioned earlier, I sang for charity, raised lots of money. Using that money, I visited villages in India and chose poor individuals for scholarships.

I have a 3.8UW, 4.26W GPA. I got 2230 on the SATs. I am in the top 5% of my class that sends one kid to Harvard every year.

Do you think my low GPA for Harvard will prevent my acceptance into Harvard?

There are others in my class with higher GPAs and SATs who are looking into Harvard as well. They have about the same amount of IN-school extra curricular activities, but don't have anything quite like my singing. :)

Can I get in?

Thanks for the tips and comments!

(btw, i posted this in the what are my chances thread. there were some corrections that needed to be made as well as I wanted some feedback from some Harvardians! :) )

Well, you definitely have a shot, just give it a try!

hmm yeah, if you can sell yourself that well on your application. Remember, no matter how unique you think you are, they’re not going to know unless you explain it fully. And remember, there isn’t a lot of room so be sure to use the additional info section and upload as much info as you can think of. You’ll see what I mean

Yes, your EC record is unique! Be sure to submit a copy of the CD as a supplemental material with your app.

thanks for the tips!

do you think my application can trump others from my class? they have stronger grades and SATs. could being an indian male singer make me “unique” enough to get me into harvard?

i think u can!

i think harvard wants unique ppl.

Write in your app that your goal is to start a Hindi a cappella singing group at Harvard (and then follow through when you get there!). There’s a great one at Penn called “Penn Masala”: [Penn Masala](http://www.pennmasala.com/) . That would be a significant contribution to campus life.

Wow, impressive! Gd Luck! XD

Your ECs are really unique and great, but on the application, I would suggest to not present your end goal as going to Harvard!! I think it’s more effective to present yourself as having goals for your future career; I read an article that had an interesting point - Harvard and top schools want to admit people who will not necessarily be great college students, but who will go on to do amazing things after college. Just reading the title of this thread made me think of that. Good luck!

thanks for the posts you guys!

@lalaloo6, thanks for the tip! i will certainly keep that in mind when I work on my essays!

do you guys think harvard would choose me over others in my school although they have higher GPAs? do you think being a singer will make me a more “attractive” student to harvard?

once again, thanks for all your tips and opinions guys!!

Man, your credentials are amazing! I like the way you present your “profile” by describing everything, not simply stating… you can write a great application, for sure! But keep in mind that in the admissions business what counts is not you specifically, but what is written on the paper! Turn the application into your best friend: a friend who will be able to mention fabulous things about you! Best of luck to you!

3.8 is not exactly a low gpa…

@noitaraperp,
the thing is I am an indian(asian) kid. other kids from my school that are also indian and asian who want to apply to harvard have higher GPAs than me.

if this affects my chances in anyway,
these are the majors i am considering.

Computer Science
Engineering Science
Economics

thanks!

lol, why don’t you just say you’re interested in concentrating on music? that could boost your chances and then you can change it when you get to harvard. Sorry if that’s a little too sneaky for some people, I didn’t do that :P

umm, id rather not do that.

any1 else?

bumpity bump!

hey man
im giong to harvard next year
im indian and submitted a cd of me singing
mine was english
i havent ever erally sang hindi, just emulated what i hear in movies

if you get in, find me, i wanna hear you sing
i have a passion for it as well!

damn dude thats hella cool! i have GOT to hear u sing!!!

was the cd just ur own personal recording or was it professional? was singing ur “main” ec?

go for it, nothing to lose
