Can I major in Engineering and take a program in Environmental Science ?

Ok let me start off by saying, yes I am aware that this might be the wrong section in the forum to post this question, but I couldn't find Portland State University forum on here.

Now I am an international student and I just got accepted to Portland State University. I will have to attend a year of IELP ( mandatory ) in order for my country to send me for free. Now I have a question about being on the IELP, can I join a club in the university ?

After my year in IELP, I plan on going to Portland State to major in either Computer or Electrical Engineering. Now Portland State has a very good Environmental Science program. Will I be able to join ? What's the difference between a Major and a Program ?

If a program means a major then can I double major ? Portland State is on the quarter system, so is that possible ?

Last but not least, what classes are considered Electives ? Can I take a film or arts class as an elective ?

Thank you in advance!

College websites are very helpful:

Not definitive, but in the above link about ES, it states as a strategy:

I would recommend calling/emailing the Engineering department and asking if it is possible to double major. If not, it is likely you can take some classes in the ES or possibly minor in it (Environ Sci does not have a minor, but Environ Studies does, see the link below).

[Portland State University | Undergraduate Programs](http://www.pdx.edu/undergraduate-programs)

It looks like programs are like disciplines, and within them are possibilities for major/minor/BA/BS; see the chart for information.

The fact that PSU is on the quarter system shouldn’t affect whether or not you can double major, I know many people who double and even triple major at other OR publics, all of which are on quarters.

[Portland State Advising | Electives](http://www.pdx.edu/advising/electives)

You can take anything as an elective, it could be ES courses, film, arts, etc.

“Program” is a more general term for an area of study. If you look at their website they list all their programs and show you whether they are majors, minors, or certificates; and also which college within the university has the program.

Any reason why you don’t want to study environmental engineering?
Double majoring with EE or CE and anything else is extremely difficult unless there is a lot of overlap between the course requirements of the two degrees. So EE + math is more likely than EE and environmental science.
And since English isn’t your native language, double-majoring maybe even more of a challenge for you.
You can learn more on the website about the degree requirements.
