This is all I can think of...please tell me honestly how good my chances are. If not Penn, then what schools would you rec? thanks!

I can’t really evaluate your position without knowing more. Can you post your class rank and then identify any hooks (ethnicity, legacy, geography, etc. . .)?

i can evaluate it. even with any hooks you seem like a 5% or below. nothing in your resume looks outstanding or spectacular. decent gpa, scores, but you definitely need a 2250 or 34 to not be over looked. it doesnt seem like you have any extra curriculars besides band, which is not very important.( not to down paly being a major or anything, but every school only has one, maybe*two band majors. so schools are necessarily recruiting band majors)

oh btw, if you could get a couple more band recognitions before apps are due, that will definitely help.

I’m in the top 10% of my class, and I’m a Hispanic girl from New Mexico. And there really isn’t much higher you can go in band…I’m already 2nd in the State.

Being in the top 10% is all but a requirement, so it’s good that you have that going for you. In addition to that, being hispanic will give you a boost and so will being from New Mexico since not many kids apply to UPenn from there. . .I would give you probably about a 30% chance. Good luck

not to sound sexist or anything, but you being a girl will actually boost your chances:) since you are a female band major, it might actually stand out more. schools like mismatched traits. usually girls don’t get band major, unless you go to an all girls school, which shouldnt make a different though.

I think your minority status and solid resume, in combination with Penn’s desire for geographic diversity, will probably help you considerably in the application process. As every other CCer says, though, it really is quite difficult to say who of the gray-area applicants will make the cut and who will not; I think it boils down to what the admissions committee is looking for in a specific year.

Also, a close friend of mine who scored a 2100 on the SAT Reasoning Test and around 700 on two SAT IIs was excepted Early Decision to Penn and will be matriculating next fall. It is possible and it does happen.
