So my grades pretty much suck, but what do you guys think are my chances? Especially at NYU; that's my dream school.

Please be completely honest; don't post answers like "You can do whatever you set your mind to." Also, if you post a reply, please don't just say something like "I think you have a shot." Give me REASONS you think I have a shot; is it a reach? A match? What?

PLEASE reply, everyones opinion is valued.

Thanks! =)

Your low gpa during freshman and sophomore years should not affect your chances that badly, since you have legitimate reasons for both. And you show, with your junior and senior grades (and course load), that given better circumstances, you do very well.

You showed a steady upward trend with your grades, which colleges like to see. Colleges like the kids who maintain high GPAs and the kids who improve over time.

Also, your ACT score is very good and your ECs (most of them) show a great commitment. NYU is probably a reach for you (depending on the school you apply to), as it is for just about everyone. But I don't think it's completely out of reach.

Write an excellent essay which discusses how you overcame the problems of your first years in HS. Not a pity me essay, but an essay of how you didn't want life's obstacles to get in the way of your success. How you have grow as a person, etc.

If you back that up with a strong guidance letter and good teacher's recs, I think your ACT score and upward trend will get you into NYU. NYU doesn't ask for mid-year grades, but if you have great grades, I would send them anyway, with an additional note from your guidance counselor.
