I'm pretty sure that I'm going to be crowned tomorrow night (I really hope I do!). If I do, can I put it on my list of EC's or accomplishments? I just thought that it would be a good thing to add because it would show that I've made a pretty big impact at my school if enough people voted me to be the Homecoming king

Sure, I suppose you can add it but I’m not sure it’s entirely appropriate since the effect is probably negligible. Sorry but being crowned Homecoming King does not mean anything to admissions officer. It just means you’re popular. Not sure that it would have an adversed effect but I thought it’ll have any positive one.

Sure put it down.

You never know how things might help.

It will demonstrate that you get along well with the majority of your peers. If your application gives the impression of a student who does nothing but study this bit of info. will counter that perception.

It shows that you have a somewhat friendly personality that people like, so it might give you a slight edge over someone with the exact same credentials but who wasn’t Homecoming King…

I guess it makes sense to include it somehow in your application, but it doesn’t really seem like an EC to me. How many hours per week and how many weeks per year did you invest in it? I would guess that your campaign does not reflect a concerted, consistent effort across a number of years.

Maybe it would make more sense to include it as an honor? Perhaps you could ask your GC to include a reference in his LOR? If it doesn’t fit anywhere else, you can include it in the Additional Information section.

It would seem kind of shallow.

I would not include it. The Common App asks you how much time you worked on every EC. What would you write there? What would you write about the responsibilities you had?

I agree with rmldad: it would be best as an honor or award as opposed to an EC.

Generally, the honors are for something academic. Academic criteria involved?

This is an item that the college counselor could throw into the HS letter, as an example of your connectedness in your school community. You don’t want to waste this space on your portion of the application.

It is not an EC. It is kind of a non academic honor and shows you are a likeable person. This is good indicator of your future success at a school where they value non-academic attributes as highly as academic ones (pretty much most private schools).

My son wrote an essay about being the homecoming king; worked for him :-)

Can you? Yes. Should you? For the love of all that is good in the world, no.

…But yeah, what other people said. Did you actually do something worthwhile as homecoming king? Did you do something worthwhile that got you elected homecoming king?

In my experience with that sort of thing, it was entirely a popularity contest, and nothing worthwhile came of it for anyone.

Thanks everyone! I did end up being the Homecoming King yesterday night at the Homecoming dance! It was awesome! Also, I can’t confirm this, but I think I’m my school’s first Black homecoming king!

@V2Blast Mine was entirely a popularity contest too. I got elected because I had the Black vote (Since I was the only Black candidate), the entire football team backing me, and several others voted for me.

@father91 I might just write an essay on that. It was a major accomplishment to me

@rmldad I’m going to take your advice and include it as an honor/accomplishment
