Can I put studying languages in the activities section of the common app?

I spend a lot of time studying languages… I study French, Hindi, and Spanish and I dedicate at least 10 hours a week towards my language studies. It’s the main thing I do in my free time because I enjoy it. Can I put this in the activity section or do I include it somewhere else?

I was in a similar situation to you and kind of regret not putting that on the Common App. If these are not all languages you also study in school, I would put it down and briefly describe what you do to study these languages (textbooks, online reading, movies, language exchanges etc)

Any college that wants to see how you engage with others, take on responsibilities, have some impact, may see this as a solitary activity, more a side hobby. They may wonder why it’s your “main thing.” It’s not a tip.

How do you use this, in real life? Do you know what your targets look for?

I disagree with lookingforward. I think this is part of who you are, and what makes you unique. I’d list it.

Definitely list it!! Language is not solitary – it opens the door to communication with people around the world and an understanding of other cultures and perspectives. It’s a great hobby, your passion, and something to proudly list as an extracurricular activity. It also shows great initiative that you study these on your own, going above and beyond what is required in the subject in school. You mentioned language exchanges, which I assume means you interact with people online from around the world to practice those languages. Be sure to include that in the description of the activity, and explain what it is, since not everyone will know what “language exchange” refers to. That will make it clear that this is a social activity and not just a solitary pursuit, where you are making connections and learning about other countries from people who live there.

You will strengthen your application if you can expand on it a bit. Has studying Hindi opened your eyes to a rich ancient culture? Do you apply your Spanish language knowledge to community service? Things like that.

Where did OP mention language exchanges?
