I keep hearing the program is a joke and that there are no real advantages to being in it. I don't really want to take extra classes to meet the requirement, and I'm not planning to live in Hume. Is this a stupid idea, and am I giving up any awesome opportunities? I'm an incoming freshman by the way.

Oh, and the honors class I'm currently signed up for is Honors Calc 2, which I got roped into taking because it was the only honors class that fits my schedule, and I'm definitely scared for it.

No reason to, just don’t meet any of their stupid requirements.

Don’t officially drop out, just don’t take honors classes and don’t go to honors advisors.

I think I’m technically still in the honors program, but I havn’t met any of their requirements, I suppose I’m still in cause I still have a year to take 4 honors projects and meet one of their “pillars”. Yea right.

Early class registration is just for honors classes. Only National Merits have real early registration (it’s awesome to have).

I can see how you’d be disenchanted with the program, but it does have some benefits. The honors advisors are pretty helpful and the honors classes are a lot smaller. I took Honors Calc 3 and Differential Equations and they seemed easier than their non-honors counterparts. Calc 2 will probably be difficult no matter what though. You can definitely manage to find some honors classes that will meet some of the requirements for your major. I didn’t live in Hume either (I think it’s absolutely ridiculous how expensive it is!) but I met a lot of really nice people who did because of the honors program. Maybe not taking honors calc 2 is a good idea but I think the program is worth it :)
