Hi all, I am supposed to start college this Fall 2010. I filled out the Common App late 2009, etcetcetc.

I'm having a crazy thought of taking a gap year now (waitlisted at my favourite college, virtually no hope), so can I re-use my CommonApp and 'recycle' all its contents?

I'm sure the essay topics change yearly, so I will re-write an essay, no problem.

Can I recycle the teachers' evaluation, secondary school reports etc? Or will it be fishy that, if I apply next year, the reccs are 1 year old?

Thanks

mamaronek,

If you reapply next year, you can certainly re-use the content of your application, but your 2009-10 account will not be saved for 2010-11. All Common App Online accounts are deleted from the system in mid-July in preparation for the new cycle.

Please talk to your counselor to be sure a gap year is the way to go. If you are using it simply as a holding pattern so you can reapply next year to the school that waitlisted you this year, keep this in mind: the decision the college makes next year will be based on information that is virtually identical to what you included in this year’s app. The only difference will be whatever reporting you are able to do on the few months’ GPA year experience you have between when the program starts and when you apply again.

Getting waitlisted or denied at your top college choice definitely stings–but don’t dismiss your other options out of hand.
