Can I re-do my freshman year?

Hello all! When I graduated high school in 2016, I got accepted into three universities. Since my parents did not allow me to enroll into any of these universities, they suggested that I’d go to school at a community college until I felt the need to transfer to a school that they would like more. Taking them up on the offer, I enrolled into my local community college and finished on a poor note. I suffered from depression during the semester where I’d feel very lethargic in the morning and thought that I was not worth anything. During the first semester, I passed 3 out of the 5 classes I was taking, and in the second semester, I passed 1 out of 2. I realized a lot about myself when I finished the school year and I am now very motivated and happy and ready to start again…on the right foot. Should I re-take all of my classes from my freshman year and start over again? My original GPA was not very good. I really want to transfer to a very good university!

Also, I’d like to add I didn’t know what to expect from college, but I do now

I’m no expert, but as far as I know, every school will want the transcripts from every college you’ve attended.

You will have to send transcripts from all colleges attended. You can look into academic renewal at the original CC and you can retake the classes that you got a D or F in and some schools allow retakes for a C- . You need to check your CC’s policy.

Our D was in the same boat but luckily she only failed one class and had a W in one. Her CC lets her replace those grades if she retakes them so she got a B in the one she withdrew from and is now retaking the other. Look at your CCs policy and retake all those that you can. Many smaller or state colleges are forgiving if you retake them. I wouldn’t count on merit financial aid though.

Wow, you really ended up doing poorly at the worst time you could. With your grades right now, you can’t even transfer anywhere. Look at the CC’s grading guidelines and see what the policy is for retaking classes. They might replace the grade entirely or only average it with the F. And they may not let you retake grades higher than F or D… idk. Either way you’re not going to be able to transfer to a top university, but if you get a 4.0 in the retakes, I am sure you will be able to transfer somewhere decent.

You sound like me because this past spring was my first semester. At my school the way it works is all grades are still visible on the transcript and the highest grade of the number of attempts will be calculated in your GPA for each class. Like say you failed English Composition first attempt but got a B second attempt then only the B would be calculated in your GPA. See I don’t your school or other schools offers academic renewal but if your school is like mine then Just retake the classes you did poorly in and explain why you did poorly your first year when you apply for transfer admission to a four year institution, that’s what I plan to do.

  1. Get your mental health under control. See a psychiatrist/psychologist and get evaluated. If they diagnose you with depression, then go to the Dean of Students and see if you can get a retroactive medical withdrawal. If so, your grades will turn into W’s and not F’s. This is the best possible outcome so try to pursue this course.

  2. If that doesn’t work out, then talk to the Dean of students or your adviser about next steps. Can you retake the courses you failed in? Most likely. Ask what will happen with your GPA. Will the grade be replaced? Averaged?

  3. Take more classes your second year. DO well in them. Then apply to your state school where you will have the best chance of getting your credits accepted. Most likely they will see you are ready to continue upper college level work and admit you.

You can’t do this because you have not shown that you can handle college work. you need to prove that you can.
