Can I recieve need based aid??

hey, im a senior still working on my applications(pretty much done with them, putting final touches) but im stuck with financial aid. I do think im need need based aid,but my parents dont work(my dad is F-1 international student at a lisma esl center) and I ve applied for green card and social security number(getting it in 2 weeks).
Now if i fill out the FAFSA and not put the parents income(because dad is f-1 student so he couldnt work til now, he got working permit card recently tho) will i be eligible for the need based aid??? since they didnt work, they never got to file a tax return. i am pretty sure the green card and social security number will be recieved by the time fafsa thing is due… help!!

You cannot file the FAFSA until you have your green card because you will need your A# and social security number.

You can and will need to put your parents income and assets on the FAFSA when it is time for you to fill it out.

You will just put all 000-00-0000 in the social security field
Your father will have to use his tax ID number (if he has one) to get either an IRS transcript or non-filers form from the IRS.

You will be flagged for verification and your parents will have to provide documentation on how they meet their basic needs (food clothing and shelter)

The FAFSA you fill out will ask for income you or your parents earned in 2015, plus any savings that aren’t in approved retirement accounts (balance as of the day you submit FAFSA).

Like sybbie said, the college will want to know how your family pays for housing and food with no income.

After you get your green card and soc sec number, make sure you try and find a part time job and work as much as possible this summer, even if the college gives generous FA, they will expect a student contribution and you will need money for books and travel.

In September 2015 you posted that you attend a private high school that costs $10k tuition, and that your family’s income is <$60k.

If your parents don’t work, where did that income come from?

What colleges are applying to? You “think” your green card will get here sometime soonish…but what you really need to do is check the DEADLINES for applying for financial aid to the colleges to which you are applying. You may find that those deadlines are sooner than you think.

At this point, you would be applying for need based aid as an international student. So…see what your colleges require for THAT kind of application at this point…and get it done.

As noted…you will use income and taxes paid for 2015. you will need to list the income they had in 2015.

If they earned that income here and we’re required to file a tax return, that’s another issue. They will need to get that done…especially if you DO end up getting that green card. You won’t be able to get federally funded aid here if your parents were required to file a 2015 tax return…and didn’t.

ETA…if your family received money from others…that will also need to be included your financial aid application forms.

receive

i before e,
Except after c,
Or when sounded as “a,”
As in neighbour and weigh.

Along with the concern about when you’ll get your GC, the other issue is that you may be expecting more aid than the Feds actually give. A fed Pell Grant is only about $6,000…not enough to pay for college.

What state do you live in? When you get GC status, you’ll get instate rates unless you already qualify by going to a high school in that state.

What schools did you apply to? Most schools do not give great aid.

Who is paying for your Catholic high school tuition?

Also, when you receive your green card (and I doubt there is any guarantee that it will be in two weeks unless you received that information at a hearing), I don’t think it comes with a SSN. My daughter did not receive a SSN automatically with her green card (although it has been many years). It is faster to just go to SSA and request one.
