Can I retake a class in which I get a "P"?

I am considering switching one of my lower division classes (math) this semester to P/No Pass. I am thinking I might get a C in the class, and don't want to ruin my GPA. The class is a prerequisite for my intended second major (not math). If I switch to Pass/No Pass and pass it (what I expect would happen), will I be allowed to retake it next semester for a grade?

The website tells what grades do allow a retake, but it doesn't specifically say anything about getting a "P."

Or is it the case that if I get "P," I will be forever precluded from adding any major that requires that course?

Incidentally, is there ever a situation in which a department would allow one to use a "P" to get into a major even though the official requirement is that the class must be taken for a letter grade?

They might just dig through the records to find the letter grade you would’ve gotten. Profs have to record and submit all letter grades before they get converted to P/NP.

But don’t trust me. Ask the department.

if you get a P, you are not allowed to retake.

^^ is correct
