Oh wow, this is probably a really dumb question I would not be asking if I had not been revising essays for the past 12 hours, but in the ‘why Penn’ essay, can i just say Penn? Or does it always have to be the University of Pennsylvania?

Yes, i did some of both, just whatever you do don't use UPENN

oh thank you

Yes, Penn is the acceptable and preferred usage!

Oops, I didn't know that! I put at one point in my essay "UPenn professors." Other than that, I didn't abbreviate. BTW, why couldn't we put UPenn?

Well, previously on this site I linked to an interview with the dean of admissions where he says to call it Penn and that UPenn is a pet peeve of his! Don't worry if you did, though! If you were on campus or lived in Philly you'd know that everyone says "Penn." The only place UPenn is used is for its email and website addresses.

I also heard that UPenn is a big taboo, so I was extra careful when writing the essay

Here's the link again:

i never liked the term anyway

Yea, I never liked UPenn, either.

The U adds that unnecessary second syllable. Clearly Penn and the other ivies with one syllable reign supreme. Harvard and my god, the three-sylabble Columbia are clearly inferior! :)

12 hours of revising? I wrote mine in 2 hours this (yesterday) morning

... you people scare me!

Yeah, I spent 4 revising a Cornell one today.

I think the thing is brainstorming and like, writing thoughts down.

I thought for weeks about my essays, and spent ~8 hours (within 3 days) writing each of my main 2 essays.

i dont think they care whether you say penn or upenn. for the record i said upenn a good 10 times and got in

ugh!!!@!@! that's sooooo annoying.
i had Penn originally and my friends and my mom told me to change it. ugh.

12 hours of revising is totally unnecessary...I probably spent a total of 4-5 hours on the essay--writing and editing.

I had Penn but my GC had me change it to UPenn. And I'm pretty sure I didn't spend more than 2.5 hours on both essays. More like 2. I still got in.

yeah. within my first sentence I wrote "the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn)" and then referred to the school as UPenn for the rest of the essay. and i got it. I dont think it matters.

lol. wow, people take posts waaaay too seriously/literally. 12 hours was sort of an exageration.

I called it the University of Pennsylvania once and called it Penn the rest of the time. Yes, I'm lazy. :)
