Can I SIR and back out later?

UCs are my financial safety. I have decided to accept an OOS offer. Until all the financial details are worked out I want to keep a UC option open. Is it OK to do? I’m looking at it as a $100 insurance.

That is indeed the way to look at it, as you have $100 at risk.

It is no different than being on the waitlist for an Ivy but accepted by a UC - you SIR to where you will go unless the conditional acceptance, waitlist, financial arrangements or whatever are resolved since you will only conditionally go to the other school and they haven’t yet responded with the information you need to make a firm commitment there.

You can, there is no penalty other than losing the deposit.

Well, they didn’t want a deposit from me … perhaps because I have a need based free ride.

I thought that submitting SIRs to multiple schools could get you rescinded from both if they found out?

If that is the case with UCs, be careful.
