Can I start on my applications now?

For schools using the Common Application with their own supplements? Is it allowed to submit the application before the fall semester grades are out and just update it in January?

for the spring or for the fall?

for the spring, you should start now.

for the fall, you have plenty of time.

For fall 08 admission. I realize that there’s plenty of time to work on the application still, but I’m taking the SATs (never took in HS) in Oct and already selected the four schools they’d send to for free. I was concerned that the scores would get thrown out without an application under my name already in place.

oh, you have plenty of time. you can fill out most of the app sections now, but where it says “grades, GPA, etc” just wait till your most recent grades are posted in December

You don’t need to worry about your scores getting there before you’ve submitted an application. Schools are aware that students will often submit the four free scores to desired schools, well in advance of submitting applications.

They will open a file for you and await further app materials.

Personally, I would wait to submit the app until your grades were ready; but you can go ahead and submit the application if you want. Send your transcript when ready.

That was very helpful Andale, thank you very much! I will take your advice and submit the application after my fall grades are out.

so, when any information is sent such as letters of rec or transcripts, the school will open a file and keep it open for the entire “transfer season”?

Yes, that is how schools typically do it. I don’t suppose any of us can guarantee it at any particular school… so you could call to check. But, in general, Admissions Offices open a file when any element of the application arrives, and await the remaining elements.
