I was accepted into Tulane with a 22k scholarship, the "founders" i'm pretty sure it's called.I still want to try for the Dean's Honors Scholarship though, am I still eligible for it?

Yes, although it is my understanding that you can not stack the awards. In the first paragraph of the “Supplemental material” letter that came with the Presidential Scholar award, it states “Students may not receive a Presidential scholar award in combination with any other Tulane merit scholarship…”. I assume you received a similar letter.

I believe if you win the DHS, you would simply get that full tuition award and not the partial tuition Founders.

The awards are in different categories. The Presidential, Distinguished Scholars, Founders, and Academic Achievement awards (what I call “automatic consideration” awards) are given based on being admitted and your qualifications presented at that time. No additional application or effort is required. The DHS, on the other hand, has to be applied for, and the additional requirements of the box project and the teacher’s evaluation as outlined on the DHS application are needed. No one would win a DHS without winning one of the automatic consideration awards.

twoby2013 is therefore completely correct, the DHS supercedes the automatic consideration awards, since Tulane doesn’t generally allow students to have Tulane based scholarships that exceed full tuition. There are exceptions such as the Hainkel (available to Louisiana residents only and I think there are only 2 awarded), but they are very few.

Not to put a damper on your enthusiasm, but be aware that there are anywhere from 1000-1500 applications for 75 DHS awards, and as Tulane states, students that receive this award generally have SAT scores of 2250+ or ACT of 33+, top 5% of their class (which generally means a very high GPA along with as challenging a schedule as your school offers), other outstanding credentials and of course a good box project. In other words the fact that you will be competing against students that have already been awarded Presidential and Distinguished Scholar awards means there will be some large number of DHS apps from students with (presumably) significantly higher stats.

Definitely not trying to tell you not to go for it, in fact I think you probably should. I just want to make sure you understand the parameters behind the awarding of the DHS.
