Can I still be a math major with a 720?

My SAT scores are 1520/1600 with an 800 CR and 720 Math. I really love math though, and I've been thinking about being a math major and pre-med. Would a 720 (which is still good) reflect poorly on me if I'm applying as a math major/premed student?

I'm pretty good at math, I just make stupid mistakes sometimes. Oh, and I also got a 720 on the Math II. Retake?

Of course you can…

If you are wanting to get into MIT, Caltech, etc. you probably won’t get in. So yes, it will hurt your chances for acceptance to top math/science/premed schools.

But there are thousands upon thousands of schools out there, and they are just waiting for scores (and people) like yours. But, like I said, the top colleges are probably not going to look on those scores favorably. I would retake SAT II math again if I were you…

Show colleges awesome AMC/AIME/USAMO scores to offset those and so they know you really are good at math and its just silly mistakes that’s getting you

The math skill that the SAT tests doesn’t necessarily have to correspond to actual math skill - If you have taken the most challenging math offered at your school (DiffEq for mine) and have received 5s on Calc BC tests and the like, and have a good grade (i.e. 800) on your SAT 2s math, and of course have no other problems, then even schools like MIT aren’t beyond you.

Otherwise, a 720 is a great score! No school bar the ivies or the MITs and Caltechs would look down upon you for it.

edit: premed, anyway, doesn’t care if you don’t attend a top tier school. Postgrad is all that counts really, and they relatively unbiased regarding the prestige of your under.

No. You are done. You will never get into college. You cannot even major in math at a CC.

You’re in the 96th percentile. Unless you’re aiming for MIT and Caltech, you’re fine.

There are PLENTY of folks who got into MIT with a 720 (or below! The horror!) in math. Go look at accepted stats of prior year applicants.

OP didn’t say MIT was the goal anyway – but that a math major was. OP, you might look at various schools’ websites to see what;s involved in a math major. Upper-division classes are often heavy on theory, unless one goes into applied math, actuarial, finance, accounting, etc. There are plenty of great things a math-oriented person can go into, and a 720 is no barrier to doing so.

MIT SAT middle 50% from CB:
SAT Math: 720 - 800

Just saying it’s not the ideal score considering how selective MIT is.

Sorry to dampen the mood here, but a 720 on the SAT II is awfully low for a math major. Honestly, I doubt you’ll be able to stick with it. What type of math background do you have?

720 is fine. It’s not like you HAVE to be a math major anyway, you’re just considering it, which is fine. Plus, a 720 on one test doesn’t demonstrate that you suck at math for someone who wants to major in it.

I would retake your SAT II Math II. 720 on the Math II isn’t that impressive considering an 800 is only in the 91 percentile. It’s up to you to retake the SAT I.

Thanks for the help. This year (as a junior) I got a 5 on AP Calculus AB. I realize my SAT II is low, so I think I’ll retake that. But on the SAT I, I think I’ll stick with my 720. And I have never considered MIT, so don’t worry about that.

Actually, a female (making an assumption here, “Stella”) with a 1520/1600 would be pretty highly prized by MIT. It’s a male-dominated student body and I’ve read that they’d like greater balance.

^ no not really. Many females get perfects. And in fact the male to female ratio is 1:1 unlike Caltech…

^And MIT has to exert considerable effort to achieve that ratio.

Well, thank goodness she has no interest in MIT!

I’ve seen plenty of MITers with 720M =) I myself am one, haha.
You can most definitely become a math major with a 720. SAT shows nothing about the level of dedication, interest, and passion you have towards a major; don’t let a feeble number drive your future.

good for you Vivi!
