I got a D in honors chem during the second semester of my sophomore year. I got a B the first semester. I would like to apply to a few CSU schools and I’m concerned about wether or not my application will be disregarded because of the D. I plan on retaking the semester during my senior year. However because it was the second semester and the transcript submission is in January, I am not sure if I will even be considered.
Until you have the official retake on your transcript, the D will unfortunately be included in your CSU GPA capped weighted GPA. You can see how much of an impact it will have by calculating your GPA.
See link: https://www2.calstate.edu/apply/eligibility-index
Since the CSU’s will not see your Senior grades at time of application, all they will see is the repeat class is in progress. The Cal states do allow grade validation for Chemistry which means if you take a higher level Chem course like AP and pass, your Honors Chem course is validated by not repeating. Either way the D will be included in your GPA calculation.
The answer to your question is it depends. If you do not meet the a-g course requirements at time of application including in-progress and planned classes due to the D (2 years Laboratory Science with 1 year being a Physical science) then you will be ineligible to apply. The one D will not keep you from applying if you meet all the minimum course requirements.
The D would be part of the a-g requirements, however I’m planning on retaking the semester. Would it still make me ineligible to apply?
Have you completed 1 year of a biological science class? IF so, then you will have the Chemistry repeat semester in-progress Senior year so not it will not make you ineligible to apply to the Cal states. Have you taken any other sciences classes that would fulfill the minimum science requirements?
The D grade will however impact your GPA so you need to see what your Cal State GPA will be at end of Junior year. Since the Cal states are test optional for Fall 2021, GPA will be a big factor in CSU admissions.
I took honors bio freshman year. I’m currently taking ib bio and I’m planning on taking a college bio class over the summer.
Even with the D my gpa would still be okay since I’m currently taking 5 ap classes. Next semester I’ll be taking 6 so I think I’ll be okay.
note that UCs and CSUs both cap your GPA with just 8 semesters of bonus credits - so all that AP has a diminishing return on your GPA.
here’s a GPA calculator that will illustrate the impact of the cap.

I’d also say, I know few kids that can handle 6 APs at once - you may wish to ease up a little next year.
Good luck
You need 1 Biological Science class and 1 Physical science class (Chemistry or Physics) as a minimum for CSU eligibility. Since you did not pass 2nd semester Chemistry, you will definitely need to either retake that 2nd semester or take Physics to meet the minimum requirement by end of Senior year. Also note, depending upon which Cal States you are applying, they like to see more than the minimum a-g course requirements. You do not need another Bio class since you already have 2 on your transcript. Take either Physics or a higher level Chemistry class.
