Can I still get in?

I just finished grade 11 and unfortunately my marks weren't all that good. In my first semester, I finished with:

70% in French
70% in Math
62% in Biology
71% in Physics

My average for my first semester was 68.3%

For my second semester, I finished with:

90% in foods
82% in English
78% in Socials'
72% in Chemistry

My average for second semester was 80.5%. The entire year averages out at about 74.4%.

I started doing better in the second part of the second semester, but I didn't really finish with the marks I wanted. I plan on attending McGill in the Fall of 2012. My question is that if I do good in grade 12 (hopefully an average of over 90%), could I still get in? And also, when do you apply for early acceptance and do you have to apply for early acceptance if you are attending in the fall? I think you can apply in February right? When is the other application date, in June? Thanks a lot, I'm really stressing over this and looking forward to your responses.

A couple of questions first:

1) Are you Canadian? More specifically, are you from Ontario?

2) Are you planning to go into Science?

So, if you are from Canada, your grade 11 marks will not matter. Grade 11 marks are only considered for scholarships and early acceptance. You don’t need to apply for early acceptance for McGill, you just apply by the deadline they give you, and if your grade 11 marks are good and your first semester grade 12 marks are well above the required average, they will give you early acceptance.

If you are going to go into science, you really have to push up your average to at least a 93.

Hope that helped.

Thanks for replying man and sorry I hadn’t posted earlier. Anyways to answer your questions:

1) I’m Canadian but I’m from B.C.
2) At this point I’m not sure if I want to go into science, although I was informed I do not need to pick a major until 2nd year.

As far as the early acceptance thing goes, when do you apply for that? And when is normal application time? Can I apply in June/when ALL my grade 12 marks are in? They only average your top 6 grade 12 marks right? Sorry I know it’s a lot but I appreciate you helping me out ;)

You don’t need to pick your major, but you do need to know which faculty you will be applying to. Because if you apply to the Science Faculty (specifically the Biological, Biomedical and Life Sciences program) you will need a 93 average. However, if you decide that you do not want to go into science, and you apply to the Arts Faculty, your overall average will need to be around 87.

I’ve already answered this question in my previous post. But I guess I’ll just repeat myself to be clear: YOU DO NOT APPLY FOR EARLY ACCEPTANCE. Everyone applies at the same time by the deadline, and if your marks are good enough, they will offer you admission earlier than some of the other applicants.

The application deadline is February 1st. You must apply by this date, or you will not be considered for admission. You cannot apply in June after all your grade 12 marks are in. If you are from BC they will look at your top 5 marks.

I highly recommend that you check out the McGill website. All of your questions can be easily answered by using a quick search.

Okay thanks that cleared up a lot of stuff. But there’s still one thing I’m not quite sure of: It says for B.C. students that our top 5 grade 12 marks are looked at right? Well here, we only have 4 classes per semester. Semester 1 ends in February and our FINAL marks for each of those 4 courses are issued a week or two into February. So would I send them the marks from those 4 courses + my best grade 11 course? And since the final mark for those grade 12 courses haven’t been issued yet, would I have to send the marks I got on my first report card instead of the final (2 report cards per semester, one in the middle and one at the end)? Thank You.

No, you only send them your Grade 12 marks. After you send McGill your first semester marks, and McGill finds them sufficient, you will be offered admission between February 1 - 25. However, if McGill finds that your first semester Grade 12 marks are not high enough and they need to see your second semester marks, they will wait until you send them your midterm marks before they offer you admission.

Thank You so much now I can relax! I know I shouldn’t of screwed around so much in grade 11 and now I have to pay the price by not being eligible to apply for scholarships or getting early acceptance. But it’ll give me extra motivation to do my best in grade 12 and make sure I get in.
