Can I still get into a CSU if I have some low grades?

I'm a junior in high school and have always wanted to go to Sac State but I'm worried that I won't be able to get in now because I just bombed my AP US History final and my grade dropped to a D+ which is the worst grade I've gotten in a long time (I got an F in Algebra senior year but I took summer school and got a C). I've taken about 4 different honors classes and have gotten A's and B's in all of them but AP was just way too hard for me. I only got a couple C's my freshman year and only A's and B's last year. My GPA is around 3.2 I think and I have some good extracurriculares. Do I still have a chance of getting into Sac State or another CSU??

I went there for business many moons ago.

You have to complete the a-g requirements with a C or better. So, since the A requirement is:

“History and Social Science (including 1 year of U.S. history or 1 semester of U.S. history and 1 semester of civics or American government AND 1 year of social science)”

There are lots of ways to meet that requirement. Perhaps you’ve already taken courses that will get you there. If not, you could re-take the semester of APUSH as a summer class, you could take a semester of non-AP US history or, you could take a class at your local community college.

It might also be a good idea to sit down with an admissions counselor from Sac (or your local Cal State U) and discuss how to meet the requirement. They can help you pick the best path for your situation. They used to allow ‘validation’ meaning, if you got a C or better in the second semester, you got credit for the full year. I couldn’t find a reference on the CSU web site, so, don’t assume that’s still the case.

You have plenty of time to meet this requirement.

Good luck and Go Hornets!

So do I only have to get a C or better for one semester or US History or is it one year. I was thinking of transferring to regular US History for next semester so getting an A or B shouldn’t be a problem.

If you have only one semester of US history, you also need a semester of civics or American government. In addition, you need an additional year of social studies.

Here is the handy list of a-g requirements for CSU and UC:
http://www.calstate.edu/sas/documents/csu-uc-a-gcomparisonmatrix.pdf</a></p>

Validation by completing more advanced courses only applies to foreign language, some math, and (for CSU) chemistry, according to the above chart.

Alternate means of meeting a-g requirements (SAT subject tests, AP tests, college courses) are listed in:
http://www.calstate.edu/sas/onestopkiosk/documents/AdmissionHandbook.pdf</a></p>

Thanks for straightening me out on Validation @‌ucbalumnus

@Megan639 - It probably makes sense to switch to the regular US History next semester. Make a sit down appointment with an admission counselor at Sac or your local CSU. Bring your transcript (doesn’t need to be official, just your grades to date) and course list from your high school. Ask them to help you navigate the A-G maze. Do this before you sign up for next years classes. You will leave with a specific plan for your high school coursework, a target for your GPA and SAT/ACT score, and a high level of comfort that Sac State (or other CSUs) will have a seat for you. They love to do this and will be happy to make time for you - seriously.

Good luck,

CSUs like CSUEB and CSUDH accept anyone as long as you have at least a C in your A-G classes. You’ll be ok.

Actually, non-impacted majors at non-impacted CSUs admit frosh at the thresholds listed in these tables:
<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU;
<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU;

A California resident with a 2.00 HS GPA (calculated by the CSU method) needs a 30 ACT or 1300 SAT CR+M (superscored) to be admitted to a non-impacted major at a non-impacted CSU.
