Can I still get into a good college if my first language is not English?

Funny story. In 9th grade before taking my first regents I took an English/Russian dictionary from school library, because I wasn’t sure if I can use my school iPad to translate during the exam. 30 minutes before my first exam I went to my guidance counselor to make sure that I can use a dictionary. But turned out that I can’t have a dictionary and I don’t get any extra time. And I found out about this 30 minutes before my first exam. Before that I was sure that I can get some kind of help, it seemed obvious to me. But I was so shocked when I four out. I almost started crying, seriously, I was afraid to fail 9th grade. But I passed all regents that year, however I got only like a 70 on all of them except math. In 10th grade I got 85-95 on my regents because I studied more for them. This year I’m hoping to get 90+, but English regents makes me nervous.

For an advanced regents with honors or a regents with honors you must have a 90 average on your regents exams

For an advanced regents with mastery in mathematics you must meet all of the requirements for an advanced regents must you must get at least an 85 on all 3 math regents.

For an advanced regents with mastery in science you must score an 85 in 3 science regents

For an advanced regents with mastery in math and science you must get an 85+ in 3 math regents and 3 science regents

Well I guess I’m going to get a mastery in math

What if I got 70 in 9th grade but 91 in 10th grade in science?

What was the 71 in? Unless you retake then you probably won’t get honors

Biology, but I’m taking 4 sciences instead of 3

So hopefully if I do well in chemistry and physics this year I can get it

Chemistry this year physics next year

Are you sure that you can score a 90 on the Spanish regents? If you are not positive, then find out if another school offers Russian and if you can take it there this june

I’m sure I can score a 90, if I don’t I will take Russian regents. Is there actually Russian regents exam? Because I can’t find it on regents website.

Russians is considered a low incidence language (this means it is not one of the 6 “standard” languages that het give the LOTE in). It would have to be ordered By your school or they would need to find a Hub site for your to take the exam

There is a Russian school in Poughkeepsie, not far from where I live. Do you think they might ofter Russian regents there? Since it’s a school for Russian people

You can always have your GC ask or have your mom reach out to the school. Worse case you should be able to take the test as a walk-in

Your gc can order the test especially for you I’d you request it. Or see if they offer it at the other school - two world language regents would be good for your application.
Dual enrollment is not boces.
Ask your gc about being dual enrolled next year.
Could your mother afford a calculus community college class this summer ? In math, it’s the level achieved that matters, so if you took calculus 1 and did well, then you could skip pre-calculus at your school and simply continue with cc classes in various subjects.

Ok, I will ask my counselor

I can’t take any classes in summer, I’m going to Russia to see my relatives

You have many options…if you are super smart and go to a SUNY you will stand out…and that is good. You will have many opportunities…don’t worry about how selective a college is…make sure you will feel challenged and it is affordable to you.

Good for you for doing so well!

What about registering for a public virtual school ? And taking classes this summer even from Russia (online)?
Does nys offer free online classes in subjects like calculus ?
If not, there’s flvs but it’s $800…

All schools that I like require grades higher than mine so I’m not sure that I will go somewhere I like and study what I want to study. How selective college is not important for me as long as it doesn’t just take everyone. But thanks for advice.

I’m not sure that I will have time to study when I’m in Russia. + there’s a huge time difference.
