Can I still get into a good college if my first language is not English?

“I’ve asked for help in my school many times, no ones has provided it to me.”

Then you need to either a) find a new way to ask the question so that you do get the help that you need, or b) bring in your mom so she can push for them to get you the help that you need, or c) both.

Okay, then it’s VERY important you discuss costs right now. Run NPC’s together - perhaps on Ithaca, SUNY Geneseo, SUNY Albany, and Dickinson, for a variety of choices. What does she think of the amounts? Will she send you back to Russia for university regardless of your preference? Would you rather return to Russia?

That’s exactly what my parents are planning to do. I wanted to handle the situation on my own, without having to complain to my parents, but it’s not working.

No, I can go to college wherever I want and that’s why I’m trying to figure out how do I get into colleges here and what are the benefits, then compare it to Russia and make a logical decision about this.

@annaheyworld - Let your parents step in. That’s what you have parents for.

Well my parents also get back from work only after 6pm, so they would have to take some time off their job, so it was uncomfortable for me to ask them. But I did and they said it won’t be a problem for them to come to school.

Excellent!

In the US, it is normal for parents to be involved in their children’s educations. You, your teachers, and your parents will all benefit from having a chance to meet each other and talk these things through.

I hope so

I was in the exact situation you were back when I came here at 12 years old. Through working harder than everyone else I was able to learn English within the year of being here without any help from teachers. I also didn’t know anything about grades, ECs, ACTs or anything moderately important for attending a good university. But I can assure you that you can still do it

How did the meeting between your parents and the principal/guidance counselor go ? Were they able to defend your rights ?

Yeah I wish there were more events in school to explain students about applying to colleges, because I know a lot of people in my school, even those who lived in the U.S. since they were born and who are really smart and have a lot of potential, that don’t know anything about the application process. So I’m really happy I found this website.

Unfortunately this week was very busy and my parents didn’t have a chance to come to school, but next week hopefully they will. I’m going to speak to my counselor this Friday to set up an appointment with my parents and discuss other things as well.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you.
Review the things adults on this thread told you.
Don’t be negative, stay upbeat (pretend to be…)
Were you able to talk to your English teacher and explain the cultural misunderstanding?

No, I was in school only for 2 days this week and homework in English class was not very hard for me to do on time. But I do need to talk to my teacher anyway.

Thank you for advice

GOOD JOB on the work done on time!!!
I’ll keep my fingers crossed for the meeting tomorrow.

Thank you
