I am a freshman. I had a C- in Spanish 2 and a B in AS English 1 and the horrible grade point average of 3.5. I am now taking the below average courses of Algebra 1 and Spanish 1 because I was sick alot during 8th grade. If I get all A's during this semester I would have a 3.5 my first semester and 4.0 my second semester. I plan to take Geometry, Algebra 2, and Spanish 2 during the summer. That means I would be in advanced math and regular spanish. The next summer I plan to take Calculus AB with my asian friend. So I would finish Calculus my junior year and take AP Stat my Senior Year. Sorry if my sentences seem jumbled. The question I am asking here is will colleges (ESPECIALLY VERY ELITE COLLEGES SUCH AS STANFORD AND HARVARD) care about my bad GPA during my freshman year. Or will they understand that I was sick and not care. OR even better will they marvel at the fact that I took two math classes in one summer, AND took the time out of summer to catch up?

as long as you are improving each semester and continuing to take the most challenging courses available you will have a chance. Of course you will need a great SAT score and essay and ec’s and even then you never can be sure since the competion is always very tough. Good luck

Stanford claims not to consider your 9th grade grades. However, they are available in the transcripts and will be visible.
